PRESS RELEASE – Members of the Vieux-Fort Concerned Citizens Coalition for Change (VFCCCC) were taken aback, when in the HTS Newscast of March 20, 2017, the Prime Minister Chastanet maliciously sought to characterize the group as a mouthpiece of the St. Lucia Labour Party.

This is utter rubbish being spewed from the mouth of the Prime Minister and is further testimony to the disregard, disrespect and contempt that he harbours for democratic rights of citizens of this country such as the right of association and the right of free speech.

The VFCCCC has said before that it was in conceptual phase when DSH Agreements were leaked to the public. However, the outrageous, ridiculous and insensitive terms and conditions of these agreements, which gave all the benefits to the Master Developer while St. Lucia would bear all the risks, necessitated an urgent response by the VFCCC.

From the outset the group identified this and other main issues of concern and invited the Prime Minister to speak with the people of Vieux-Fort. This was done no less than three times and that expectation of a meeting with the Prime Minister was being echoed throughout the town and district of Vieux-Fort. The large turnout at the VFCCCC’s first Town Hall Meeting bears overwhelming testimony to this.

The Prime Minister treated these requests with absolute contempt including a petition signed by over 3000 persons, hand-delivered to his office. It is also perplexing that the Prime Minister can travel thousands of miles to England, the US, Canada and elsewhere to present his case to the St. Lucia diaspora but arrogantly refuses to travel to Vieux-Fort, just about 35 miles from his office, to answer the burning questions of the farmers, fishermen, cattle, breeders, charcoal producers, bee-keepers and local residents who will be deprived of 900 acres of prime, investment lands, traditional recreational areas, natural and sensitive environments which protect the land and provide habitats for numerous life forms and resources to support many livelihoods, and land for their future development needs.

Instead of attaching unfounded or ill-advised labels to the profile of the VFCCCC, Allen Chastanet should be thankful to the group for undertaking, at personal cost to its members, activities to inform residents and generate discussion on the pros and cons of the DSH Project.

This is what we expect in a functional democracy Allen Chastanet. A responsible government must incorporate the views, suggestions, /concerns, etc. of the people into the final decision-making exercise. Good decision-making is not an exclusive right or ability of a sitting Prime Minister and his Cabinet.

Referring to the VFCCCC as a “mouth-piece of the St. Lucia Labour Party” does not address the numerous concerns of the residents of Vieux-Fort and other citizens of St. Lucia regarding the DSH Deal.

Your response lacks the maturity, objectivity, thoughtfulness, reasonableness, insightfulness and political savviness expected of a prime minister. The residents of Vieux-Fort and other citizens of St. Lucia want clear, factual and reassuring answers and are waiting to hear them from you, Prime Minister Chastanet.

  1. wHAT IS AMASING IS THAT NO ONE HAS SOUGHT TO CRITICISE THE LABOUR PARTY FOR HAVING THE DSH AGREEMENT IN THEIR POSSESSION FOR OVER 18 MONTHS, DID NOT APPRISE THE STLUCIANS ABOUT IT, NEVER HAD TOWN HALL MEETING TO DISCUSS THE HORRIBLE CLAUSES IT CONTAINED, NO CORROSPONDENCE BETWEEN THE COMMITTEE TO OUTLING THEIR DISGUST WITHTHE INVESTOR ABOUT THE ONE SIDED BENEFITS OF THE PROPOSAL. WAS IT EVER DISCUSSED AT CABINET LEVEL?..... IMAGINE KENNY GAVE HIS BLUEEYE BOY TO CHAIR THE COMMITTEE WHEN H HAD HIS OWN PROJECT HE DISCOVERED FROM ENGLAND. OBVIOPUSLY HE SHELVED IT IN PREFERENCE TO HIS OWN. WE SHOULD NOT BE HAVING SERIOUS DISCUSSION AT THE JUNCTURE IF THEY HAD DONE THE NECESSERRY WORK TO ENSURE THIS DEAL IS OF BENEFIT TO BOTH PARTIES. I UNDERSTAND THE BUY BACK CLAUSE HE REMOVED IT AND BROUGHT IT BACK. MY PM NOW WAS LEFT WITH THE SHITTY END OF THE STICK BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE OF THE SLP GANG TO ADDRESS THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. POOR GUYS ARE STILL REELLING FROM THE EFECTS OF CHASTANAET'S ELECTION "ELECTION GROS PWELL"

  2. When the subject of Freedom Bay came up, Walcott shifted uneasily in his seat. “What are they doing now?” he asked, somewhat bewildered. “Who is allowing that to happen? This government? I didn’t know that, but that’s very bad news to me. That’s terrible news and the messenger should be shot!”
The Nobel Laureate went on: “How can they find the place to build a hotel at the foot of the Pitons and they can’t find a spot to build a museum. That’s the rage that I have, the anger that I have. When I see something like that happening in comparison to what is not happening and the excuses being given . . . My brother Roddy died working for the arts in Saint Lucia. He never saw a museum go up or a theatre go up. I suppose I too will die and not see it happen either—it is shameful.”
Walcott said the whole thing speaks to our disregard of our natural heritage. Apropos of the “relaunched” Freedom Project, he asked: “Where is this hotel going to be located? Have they begun it yet? When are they starting? And exactly where is this place? Will you see it in any projection of Petit Piton? And nobody has objected to it? They have not objected to it in parliament? So the deal was approved by the Saint Lucian government?” From the eloquent mouth of a hurt-to-the-bone Derek Walcott, unanswerable questions tumbled like loosened rocks from the top of Gros Piton into the Soufriere sea.
“I am ashamed of my country,” he sighed, “because that’s whoring and you can quote me on that. If you are telling me right, that there is going to be a hotel built at the base of Petit Piton, visible as a hotel, then that is whoring and I am ashamed of my country. There can still be time for protest but what can you say when a country approves of its own disfigurement?”

  3. Terrence Joseph: could you please say who or what is blessed? The fairest judge the creator don't like cheating. He don't like abuse etc so surely I don't think he will bless you and or any thing you do if you acquired it through immoral means. If you say chastanet is blessed then I will ask you: how can he be when in the eyes of the creator he sought to justify the threat on KDA's life? You think the mighty father is pleased with that? I think that man own the young man who made the threat an apology. Thats the least he can do to morally up right citizens who seek righteousness.

  4. Calvin, too many big words. Both you and I know that 90% of the persons committing in this blog have no idea what you are saying, so please stop trying to sound intelligent!

I need you to make comments on the GDP and Economic Growth over the last 5 years. I also want you to make comments on the Unemployment rate and the increase in inflation over the last 5 years. After you do that and you provide a solution to increase the former and reduce the latter then stop this non sense of trying to sound smart.

St.Lucia needs development. Already the damn country has limited airlift and it remains an expensive destination why not create reasons to attract visitors. Same with the Dolphin Park, let's welcome all investments.

For years governments come in and go out with nothing to show, these are all revenue generators and some sort of stimulant to move economic growth, lets do it. All those persons who complain, tell me when last you even went to Vfort?

Chips...too much hypocrisy and unnecessary bickering!

    (10)(3)

    • @ Yolo...Where as I agree with you about investments, the problem is at what cost and is it sustainable? Persons like myself that are against the DSH deal in its current format would be satisfied with some negotiation. That's all! If we put colours aside and discuss this thing soberly, we will see that what we signed is madness! Plain and simple! Read what was signed please. Did some research on Dolphin parks and the forecast isn't not good. Shortly before the out going government agreed to a dolphin park, there was an outcry in San Diego about killer whales in captivity. This gained much momentum especially after Blackfish documentary and the facility closed down shortly after. This outcry has extended to dolphins and much support has been galvanized to stop or closed such facilities. This can be verified simply by some research on the internet. (see http://uk.whales.org/wdc-in-action/end-captivity). So how will this development be helpful to St.Lucia? Decimating a land mark forever in the name of development. What's next? he PITONS?

      (3)(2)

      • What landmark are you talking about? Is it the Islet? Will you change your view about the project if the landmark is not interfered with?
Some does not have access to what was signed. Can you tell us in detail, what is the agreement saying. I have been asking for that a while now. Moses Jn Baptiste made a statement on the Equine Disease Free Zone (EDFZ) and he was totally incorrect.

  5. I am SLP. But first and for most, I am a St. Lucian and a Vieux Fortian. This deal is beyond stupid. This investor have no money. We have given him permission to sell our passports to raise funds for the project. 400000 passport. We are going to destroy our ecosystem to be visitors on our own island. We are going to remove all businesses along the beach, and give almost 1000 acres of land for $1 an acre. Yet we have no access to the passport money. No shares in the development. No TV rights. No gambling rights. And after two years if project fail, we have to buy back the land and pay the investors for upgrading the land. Let's not even mention the impact it will have on the airport. So O am asking what is in this deal for us? Why cant we sell our passports and finish our hospital or continue with the NICE program, or create our own investment? Incenticise small business to employ more people. Increase of food productivity, so we spend less money on our import bills. Then we get a healthier nation , so our medical expenses decrease. Spend our passport moneys fixing roads, introducing our kids to technology and creating new manufacturing jobs. Tourist don't come here to see skyscrapers, they leave these things at home. They come from fresh air, scenery, the beach, nature and the people.

    • *applauding* Concerned Citizen you are ON POINT! Why can't we seek our own investors for the things that we NEED and WANT? Why can't the CIP board or whatever and the economic development ministry and the tourism ministry come together and form a task force that is tasked with seeking out viable sensible investors? This would work. This is what I have been preaching forever! We can do this ourselves! Are we so hungry and desperate and at the same so lazy that we will simply take whatever we get? In business we go out and seek customers, we have to know who our target audience is when it comes to marketing..(By the way...Chastanet didn't go seeking this investor, neither did the previous government, but another story for another time. Also all these ESL (Ex-St. Lucians), who sell out their flags for another country's in the name of betterment and opportunities (because there are none here)...who always seem to have the time to comment on what is going on in St. Lucia (because they just love St. Lucia)...why don't ALL of you come together, form a corporation, sell shares, pool resources and come help build this country that you claim to love so much? Why not inject some of the money you making up there into this economy? Let's work together and stop talking about it!...after all a CIP passport is ONLY $100k...and ya'll wouldn't need to buy a passport so you already $100k in front. But that is too hard to do right? The government must create jobs... The truth is this is already being done right here in SLU...just ask the Indians, the Syrians and the Chinese. Sad thing is we have not learned from our past nor from examples.

      (1)(1)

  6. The Chinese want to lay a permanent foundation here. A foundation that will only benefit them. There will be so many of them here, living on that large piece of land, it will be a village of it's own. They will gradually invest in other business such restaurants and real estate and will even put road side venders out of business. Don't take my word for it. Just saying.

    • I just find it weird that all of a sudden there is talk about the CDC and wasted space.
Is this the start of PHASE 3 a and 4 of the DSH ... now in Castries

Because that's part of my problem. All these unknowns just being sprung on us.

      (4)(4)

      • Good point! So people stop opposing for opposing sake with the dislikes. Think of the country. All the glitters is not gold. I was told of a story about John George Melvin Compton, where an Italian investor came into town and had a meeting with the then Prime Minister. He entertained the business man but whispered in the ears of either Sir Dwight or Ausbert " invisible dollars." That was the last you heard of that investor.
