PRESS RELEASE  – Plans are underway to host the 5th annual CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for the Cure on Sunday October 2nd. The Walk for the Cure has grown exponentially each year, and expectations are for participation and funds raised to surpass those of last year.

The Walk for the Cure started in 2012, as part of the bank’s 10th anniversary celebrations. That year, the Walk raised just over US$30,000 across the region. In 2013, the funds raised increased to $100,000 and in 2014, the Walk for the Cure raised approximately US$200,000 to support critical cancer care, purchase vital equipment necessary to treat patients and host general education programmes to create greater awareness of the disease across the region.

Last year CIBC FirstCaribbean raised US$400,000.00 throughout the region and had over 20,000 walkers participating. Locally, over 200 walkers raised EC$50,000.00 to be donated to the St. Lucia Cancer Society and Faces of Cancer.

Country Manager, Ladesa James-Williams noted, “Every year the interest in and scope of the Walk for the Cure increases, an indication of the positive impact that the Walk has both locally and regionally on individuals and cancer support groups alike. Not only are we able to raise funds to support local cancer groups, but by this walk we are able to celebrate the lives of local cancer survivors and honor the memory of loved ones who have gone before us.”

A number of regional and local sponsors also came on board last year showcasing an ongoing commitment to growing the event and its benefit to the lives of those influenced by cancer. Fund raising activities are being organized in addition to the walk, and interested persons are asked to show their support by making a donation at all branches of CIBC FirstCaribbean or by signing up to participate in the Walk for the Cure. Donations can be made by visiting a branch or by direct deposit to the Walk for the Cure, CIBC FirstCaribbean account number: 106995550.
