Christmas barrel concessions programme to continue

The Christmas barrel concessions programme continues this year.

Speaking on his weekly talk show in Vieux-Fort, Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony said the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to continue the concessions this year.

Given the new system of taxation, any exemptions of value added tax need to be approved by the House of Assembly, he said. Therefore, the House will meet in the next two weeks to consider the proposed exemptions.

It is expected that the normal rules, such as a maximum of two barrels per household, among others, will remain the same.

  2. It is really frivolous and inappropriate for Concerned Citizen to conclude that "a huge fiscal deficit" is caused by government largess. I do not know if you are an economist sir, but I tell you without any fear of contradiction that the huge fiscal deficit you alluded to is the result of a stagnant economy. As the economy stagnates less revenue is collected by government thereby resulting in higher fiscal deficit. Get your facts straight before you start blaming people for wanting assistance from government. Please note, it is the responsibility of government to stimulate the economy and create jobs thru stimulus spending in the absence of private investment.

  4. The government always speak of making things better for the public, when they are just blatantly lying. They're trying to make things harder. why should a family be limited to receiving two barrels, that's absolutely ridiculous. Also, taxes are already a ridiculous rate, and why is it on everything ? For a small country, the government does not try to help their people, but keep them trapped in debt, and everyone living from pay-check to pay-check.

    • Cognitive dissonance at it's finest. Your problem is that you want the government to help, why do you think we have all these taxes and a huge fiscal deficit? It's because of all these government programmes (no matter the actual efficacy) being demanded by people like you. Government is not the solution to your problems, you are.
