Parliament has approved a motion presented to the House by Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony requesting an amendment to the Value Added Tax Act to allow for concessions on Christmas barrels.
These concessions apply to unsolicited personal items including food, clothing, toys and other household consumables contained in barrels and imported during the period commencing on November 15, 2012 and terminating on February 8, 2013.
The exemption is limited to a maximum of two barrels per household, does not apply to electronic items and does not apply to items for commercial use.
The exemption applies to items with a total value not exceeding EC$2,500 for each barrel, a threshold which was increased by $500 by this administration.
