Celestial Self Development Centre Library to launch Adult Summer Reading Challenge

PRESS RELEASE – Celestial Self Development Centre Library is pleased to announce its first-ever Adult Summer Reading challenge, an initiative encouraging Saint Lucians to read as an example to our younger generation.

The library launches this program as a phase two of its Raise A Reader SLU® book drive campaign, which it embarked on last year that resulted in book donations being made to eight preschools in the Sans Souci and surrounding areas.

Coming at the culmination of the observance of Reading Month, May 2014, the aim of this program is to encourage persons to keep the momentum going by joining Celestial’s library. During this programme, we will be offering free library membership to persons joining our library.

The Adult Summer Reading Programme will starts on Monday, June 2, 2014, at Celestial Self Development Centre Library, Sans Souci and remains open to participants until Friday, August 29, 2014.

As participants go through their reading journey they will earn the chance to win prizes. Five persons to finish reading five books will earn the chance to win a donation of children books to the school, community library or volunteer organisation of their choice.

Each “Adult Reading Summer Challenge” participant who signs up will receive a sheet which includes ten steps to completion. Steps are achieved by reading books, getting a library card, submitting a brief book review, or attending a library programme, such as “Celestial’s Motivational Movie evening” or our “Story Time” sessions.

Participants will earn incentives as they complete the steps on the sheet. After each book is read and a brief review submitted, the participant will receive a coupon to attach to their sheet. When the sheet is completed, the participants’ name will be entered in a drawing for one of five chances to earn a donation of children books to the organization of their choice.

Participants 16 years and over are eligible to enter.

  1. Are there any adult illiteracy programs in St Lucia? I am referring to a St Lucian who's first language was Kweyol and speaks English fair. He can't seem to grasp reading and writing. Learning from an American is difficult.
