CARIBBEAN: Dominican Republic offers help to migrants willing to leave

By Jamaica Observer/AP

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Migrants who would like to leave the Dominican Republic ahead of a wave of expected deportations are being offered help from the government of the Caribbean country.

The migration agency says it has started a free bus service to take migrants to the border with Haiti. The agency says the program will run for two weeks starting Tuesday.

The announcement Monday follows the June 17 deadline for migrants to apply for legal residency under a program aimed at regulating the flow of migrants across the porous border with Haiti.

Deputy Interior Minister Washington Gonzalez said the government is reviewing nearly 290,000 applications for legal residency.

Authorities have warned that anyone without proof of legal residency faces deportations but there have as yet been no large-scale immigration raids

  1. what a shame ? This nation has always been seen as the scum of the earth. Ever since its victory over the french its been seen as a way ward delinquent to be punished. When god is not visiting the country with all types of natural disasters because of the sins of the Haitians eg. homosexuality (as was reported in some western publication), other countries are making life almost intolerable for the people. I would like to know what has the Haitians done in the DR that is so gross that they deserve the that type treatment?

  5. THE ISLAND OF HISPANIOLA IS SPLIT IN TWO WITH THE FRENCH-SPEAKING HAITI ON ONE SIDE AND THE SPANISH-SPEAKING DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ON THE OTHER. THE PREDOMINANTLY WHITE DOM.REPUBLIC IS EMBARKING ON A PROGRAMME OF ETHNIC CLEANSING BY DENYING BLACK HAITIANS CITIZENSHIP AND ENFORCED DEPORTATION.

CARICOM AND THE OECS MUST IMPOSE AN ECONOMIC EMBARGO ON THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. STOP IMPORTING PRODUCTS FROM THE DOM. REPUBLIC AS THIS COUNTRY HAS CREATED A NEW APARTHEID IN THE CARIBBEAN.

  7. So they want to put the people out of their homes and the only "help" offered is a free bus service to the Haiti border. In 2015 people are being treated as if they are scum. How about they assist these individuals in becoming legal residents who will contribute to their economy. This whole thing is nonsence. Unbelievable.
