CARIBBEAN: Caribbean students to benefit from Rihanna’s new scholarship programme

NEW-rihannaCARIBBEAN360 – Barbadian-born Grammy-winning singer Rihanna has announced a global scholarship programme that would fund education for students from seven countries, including her home country and four other Caribbean nations, in the United States.

The college scholarship programme, launched through her Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), would provide up to US$50,000 in scholarships for successful applications from Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica, or the US who have already been accepted into a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited four-year college or university in the US for the 2016-2017 year.

”To be able to give the gift of an education is actually an honour. ”Higher education will help provide perspective, opportunities, and learning to a group of kids who really deserve it. I am thrilled to be able to do this,” the star told USA Today.

Recipients will receive an award ranging from US$5,000 to US$50,000, which may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance, and awards may be used only for tuition expenses.

The deadline for applications is June 10. Once applications are submitted, a committee will screen 50 finalists based on academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience and a personal essay, and winners will be announced by August.

  1. @ So Sad do you care about Barbados or any other Caribbean Island can't believe how some of you are fussing about St Lucia not getting any of the money and you always talking bad about other Caribbean

  2. How can you dictate which islands or countries she chooses to give scholarships to? The selection must have been strategic so I don't understand why people are up in arms. Have you ever bought an album of hers? But you want to benefit from her earnings huh? She doesn't owe anyone anything so go make noise and ask your government for scholarships. Maybe if they had taken those millions of dollars they sent these idiots to Grambling with( most of whom never turned back to pay their dues but stunting on FB every chance they get) and used it instead to fund UWI scholarships, many persons could have benefited out of this same money. Stupid Lucians. Half of you probably don't have a CXC certificate anyway so shut up about scholarships and deal with Brazil being chosen over Yall.

  4. Brazil, Cuba and Haiti over your closer neighbors' nationals of Saint Lucia, Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent. Really. That organization running the scholarship must have Brazilian ties it seems.

    • Its Rihanna's money US$200 million and counting and she decides who gets scholarships. She included numerous Caribbean countries. Barbados where she was born and raised is first. Guyana where her mother was born is there. Jamaica which is a major influence on her music is in so too is deserving Haiti. The 600 million people of USA and Brazil who adore her and buys her music also have a shot. The young lady is no fool she knows what she is doing. Who knows she may include other islands in the future.

Meanwhile the loud mouths in the countries not covered must put their money where their mouths are and offer scholarships like Rhi. Put up or shut up. Kudos to Rihanna for not forgetting her roots and giving back.

      • the US is not included in the scholarship, her american fans are mad about that.

    • Rihanna does not give a shi*t about St.Lucia. St. Lucia is the closest island to Barbados, yet we don't qualify for the schoolarship...Smfh. That's why I don't support the trash she puts out. I hope the tourist board is taking note. I don't want to see that heifer in St.Lucia performing at Jazz or any other show generating revenue from our people.

      • You are so sad from every angle.

If you don't support her music why should she donate scholarships to you and creeps like you? Rihanna can buy and sell you and the Tourist Board. Not that she's even aware of you or the TB's existence. She's got cash approaching Trump's stash and she is not even 30 years old.

Man SU go eat bananas and purge your so sad backside. Lol.

  5. She should use that scholarship idea to enroll in a college to get a damn degree and learn something of substance instead of dragging her naked butt everywhere like a wet dog on grass. Hopefully she'll learn a thing or 2 and maybe this time she'll have more grasp on how to count so her manager and accountant won't sell her money. She'd also learn some geography to know Brazil is not part of the Caribbean. Even millionaires need an education!

    (10)(6)

  6. Brazil is not part of tje Caribbean as far as i am concered. Rihanna need to take a look at the globe amd see where Brazil is through.

  7. Me roro. I will get ti-riri if I get a Riri scholarship. But once you get the scholarship one would have to "Work, Work, Work" to maintain it.

    • Rihanna has empathy for Brazilians probably because her drunk stepfather allegedly stabbed a Brazilian fan of hers a few years ago.
