CARIBBEAN: Alert level raised as heightened activity recorded at underwater volcano in Grenada

CARIBBEAN 360 – The UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) has heightened the alert level at underwater volcano Kick ‘em Jenny to orange – which means it could start erupting with less than a day’s warning – after strong, continuous signals were recorded in the early hours of this morning.

In an advisory posted on its website and on social media, the centre said that from 1:25 a.m. to 3 a.m., a strong continuous signal was observed on instruments monitoring the submarine volcano which is located 8 km north of Grenada.

“Signs of elevated seismicity (earthquakes) began on 11th July and continue to present. For the period since the 11th July a total of more than 200 micro and small earthquakes, of varying magnitudes, have been recorded, with the largest, prior to the strong signal, less than magnitude 3.0,” the Trinidad-based SRC reported.

It added that divers had also observed degassing occurring off the west coast of Grenada in the Moliniere Sculpture Park area.

“This activity is being closely monitored by the UWI-SRC and further updates would be issued as more information becomes available,” the centre said.

An orange alert, according to the UWI-SRC website, is issued when there is highly elevated level of seismic and/or fumarolic activity or other unusual activity. In this case, eruption may begin with less than 24 hours’ notice.

The recommended action corresponding with that orange alert is for: vulnerable communities to be advised of evacuation routes and transport put on standby; all shipping to remain outside the first exclusion zone (1.5 km from the summit); and all non-essential shipping (pleasure craft, etc.) to stay 5 km clear of the summit (second exclusion zone).

It is also recommended that local radio stations in Grenada, St. Vincent, Barbados and Trinidad be placed on alert and that residents monitor local radio stations for updates and visit the SRC website where possible.

  1. It was just last week, I dreamt I saw the sea half of it regular and on the left half was boiling and I got up and was frightening. I told my husband about my dream ,and at the time I did not know about the eruption of kick me Jenny .I was shocked to hear about it .so scary. May God have mercy on us all .

  2. Instead of casting stones (blame) on a specific set of people (gays) pray instead for forgiveness and protection. For in judging others of their sins you yourself are sinning . Thanks be to God for his glorious wonders.

  7. Nothing is going to happen...all of you guys need to calm your areolas...smh..there has been movement in the fault lines and by extension tectonic plates...in such events all weak areas on said plate will give way to pressure with such movement...those earthquakes were not large enough to cause extensive damage..

    • yourll down voting me...lol...anyways...seems yourll wish for something to happen...ok let me be negative about it then...lets consider there to be an eruption...one that will result in a plate overlapping the other...or a large mass of the sea floor fluctuating under the pressure of the volcano..this will cause an unimaginable quantity of waves....probably around 20-40 feet tall...coming behind each other...ripples rather. Vieux Fort , Rodney bay, Castries, Canaries, Soufriere (you get the point) theyre all either submerged by those waves for a few hours until the water retreats..

    • SHUT UP! You really think an entire team of scientists got this wrong? Are you bloody daft???? DO you know SINCE WHEN there have been minor earthquakes? Did your dumb ass some how peruse the reports which the scientists ascertained whilst monitoring the activity to allow them to come to this conclusion? Shut your smart ass up! Speaking out of turn as if you know with surety nothing is going to happen. Jackass.

  11. I had a vision this morning....it is possible that the volcano will erupt or we will have a major earthquake. We can't prevent nature from doing its job but we all can pray for the best... for there is a good Lord watching over us.
