Bus with tourists crash after brake failure

By SNO Staff

The bus in the embankment.

A minibus carrying tourists crashed near the Bouton gap in Soufriere Saturday morning between 11:00 and 12 noon after a failure in the vehicle’s brake system, an eyewitness has told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).

One passenger was reportedly transported to Tapion Hospital in Castries but the injuries were not life-threatening, an eyewitness said. Several others suffered minor injuries.

The eyewitness, who claimed to have spoken to the bus driver, told SNO, that the rear brake line burst. The bus careened then off the road and ended up in an embankment.

“The driver was able to control the vehicle and get it to that spot (embankment),” the source told SNO.

The Fire Service and ambulance responded to the scene.

No further details available at this time.

  1. Thank god the people are not badly hurt. What an awful vacation experience but shit happens!Glad they are ok. The drivers should service their vehicle's more often, especially if it's being use for tours!

  2. I will say that generally speaking Lucians don't pay money to maintain their vehicles. Maybe it's because things are so expensive.

  4. Can't believe some people want to involve government in everything that happens in the country these days. Want to politicize everything. You all need to get off your lorals and do things for yourselves. Stop blaming Gov. for everything that go wrong. Control your kids stop blaming gov for not putting measures in place to control their behavior in town. Check your vehicle brakes and have it service on time before you put people lives at risk. You mean I give you the rice..spoon feed you again..duhhhhhhhh

  9. What is the government's role in all of this? Isn't there a mandatory inspection for taxis at least twice a year?

  10. Thank god it wasn't fatal. I saw the tourists at the hospital but what I wasn't pleased about is that the doctor an nurses should have cleaned them up after. There was blood on their legs an arms which was disgusting. Drivers please do general check ups.

  11. Well said Ti Flo, the bus drivers need to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles. They are on the road with these vehicles and the vehicles are deteriorating underneath them and they are not aware. When you board some of these buses, your clothes get torn or some piece of metal or wire sticks into your flesh, and some of the bus drivers turn a blind eye to that.

    • At least they are experienced drivers.

I am sure that if it was one of these money-hungry young taxi drivers (though not all are), they would not have known how to control the vehicle, and thus would have a more serious accident!!

  15. We need crash barriers along the West Coast/Soufriere road. Thank God that the embankment prevented the minibus from going down the precipice otherwise this could have been much worse.
