Bus explodes after collision in Dennery

One person sustained injuries when a minibus collided with a car and burst into flames along the Richfond Highway in Dennery Saturday night.

Police sources say the bus, driven by Anthony Ghirawoo of Marigot with one passenger, was heading north, while the car, driven by Kalila Abubkr of Morne Fortune, Castries, also with one passenger, was heading in a southerly direction. The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m.

Ghirawoo and his passenger – Laurentia Leo – had enough time to exit the bus after it capsized. It exploded shortly after they escaped.

Leo, a St. Lucian residing in Martinique who was due to travel today, sustained a laceration to the left knee, among other blows. She was transported to hospital in the police vehicle.

Efforts to use a small extinguisher by the police proved futile. Sources say only one fireman was at the nearby fire station, and he was not officially on duty due to the ongoing strike action by the Fire Service Association.

However, he eventually arrived on the scene with a fire truck which had no water. By the time he returned with another fire truck, the bus was totally destroyed.

  1. this is not the first time a fire truck has been called out and it's empty this has been happening for years, the excuse is leaving the water in the tanks cause it to rust and the other is the weight factor on the suspension, water is heavy it's 10 lbs to every gallon but still this is no excuse.

  2. The guys are not Important why full the trucks with water. You guys can't read nor understand? because he had a heart he came back with one filled with water. There was an accident in the south the police had to carry the victims to hospital themselves, a former fireman told the Police we are not important! now that Mr esnard he would have to do community work everyday in Bexon, because I would never go to bexon to do anything as long as he Lives there. When Bexon people kick him out of there I would go there to work.

    • Kaks, WTF. Defective, what business you have driving a defective truck anyway. I have been around the fire service and its members for at least 10 years. Protocol as far as I know says that no fireman responds to a fire alone. He should have never left the station since his support system was not there. Choops, trying to play hero with an empty fire truck!

  4. blah blah blah blah, st.lucians just like to beat their ***. Maybe the first questions you should ask was why was the truck empty in the first place? is the truck defective? has the defect been reported ?how many times has the defect been reported? and why has this defect not been addressed?

Are you stating due to strike action, that fire trucks should be empty of water of water also, which is the base to extinguish fires?

  12. There is no reason to leave the station without water. It is the reason for being. It is like a school bus forgetting to pick up any kids.

  14. Essential services like fire, police, medical etc. should not be allowed to go on strike. There are other forms of conflict resolution available!!!

  16. The people in strike. What's the point of a strike if everything is ready for immediate use.
    Just pointing the obvious.

  17. too me the story said that he was not even supposed to be there. so I wonder if it is not reasonable to think that he never checked the vehicle. got the call and moved immediately. if it were a case of they were on duty and never checked I would criticize. however, this did not appear to be the case. we should be cautious to "look before we leap."

    • as a " professional" duty or not, he should check before leaving.. goes to show or give the perception that is normal, assuming and not verifying....double checks should be 2nd nature to a fireman....
