UPDATE: Driver escaped unhurt in vehicle fire

Firefighters responded to a call at about 12:30 p.m. that a white Nissan car (PA7977) had burst into flames opposite the Castries Market at the stoplights.

Leading fireman at Castries Central, Brian Solomon, told reporters that when the fire service arrived, the driver had already escaped unhurt from the vehicle.

“A line of one length of engine hose and a branch attached to the unit was used to extinguish the fire. Nobody was hurt; the driver had time to exit the vehicle,” the fire officer said.

Solomon said the driver claims that he had checked his vehicle this morning and is puzzled as to the reason behind the fire. The entire bonnet of the car was destroyed.

The lead fire officer said this is a common issue. He advised motorists to carry portable extinguishers on board their vehicles.
