A man was crushed by a trailer truck on New Dock Road, Vieux Fort this morning, Police Press Officer Aniel Innocent has said.

The pedestrian is so far known as ‘Trini’.

The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. near the speed bumps. The truck, registration number PK2312, was being driven by Elias Giddeon of Dennery, Innocent said.

A source said the truck driver did not stop initially because he was not aware what had happened.

An eyewitness told St. Lucia News Online that the pedestrian sustained severe head injuries.

“His head and face were crushed. His eyes were dislodged,” the eyewitness said.

  1. I knew trini very well and he like a lot of other people had a habit of crossing the new dock road whether vehicles are approaching or not. People hardly use the pedestrian crossing across from super j in vfort....its a serious problem that has taken one life, the authorities need to look into that matter.

  2. @Ganjadaddy. That should read "the comments ...they're hard to read" not "it's hard to read".

The accident was a sad event for all involved. No driver wants to kill anyone on the road. RIP the man who lost his life. And the witnesses to the accident, may you come to terms with what you saw and find peace as well. I would be horrified to witness something like that.

  4. I wonder why he was called Trini. Did he have affiliation with the island of Trinidad or just playing trini? Secondly, that area where this accident occurred has several pedestrian crossings, bus stands, businesses, public parking, among other things, which means it is high traffic and has high pedestrian usage. Thirdly, how fast was that truck moving and with the driver being from Dennery, and the inadequacy of traffic signs, how familiar was he with this area? I am not assuming blame, but in any traffic fatality involving a pedestrian, regardless of the circumstances of the accident the pedestrian almost always get the benefit of doubt.

  5. Ohh come on now people read to understand.....the article saidirectories the driver did not stop initially it's simply cause he wasn't aware of what just happened....and KYvon u claim to be under 20 u should be jailed for even sitting at the the steering wheel of that truck u claim to have driven.....u have no age to drive this trucks legally so I don't expect u to be able to stop it easily...

  6. How many drivers would love to spare head such a tragedy? No driver will want to be in that situation. No pedestrian will enjoy being hit by a vehicle. I am a driver who has been hit by a vehicle. That driver of that vehicle was so scared that he treated me with aggression initially then was able to collect his thoughts minutes later...let us be careful with our comments. Yes, I know both the deceased and the driver. let us try hard to balance this

  7. people the driver is not to blame, when he pass he saw the man standing on the side of the road, apparently the man fell after the truck pass and the trailer's back wheel pass on his head, the driver didn't know. He was called and told so. sorry for the pedestrian.

  8. My goodness! The comments on this board are filled with grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors that it's painful to read. I am willing to give English lessons for free. Poor spelling, incorrect grammar and lousy writing are all signs of illiteracy. St. Lucians we need to do better than this.

  9. He was allegedly drunk...he slipped and fell on the road..so stop blaming the driver like it was all his fault.

  11. It's always a sad state of affair whenever I try to read through the comments made by (assuming) young supposedly intelligent persons here on SNO. Aren't those persons aware that their not so intelligent, quick to assume dumb comments are read by many a persons? They refuse to take time to read and understand the articles yet quick to comment.
Do any of these persons know what it feels like to drive a container/trailer truck? If you hit someone you may not necessarily feel the impact. The size and weight of these vehicles prevent the driver from feeling the impact especially if it occurs in the rear.
Who said the driver drove off? From what I read he STOPPED at a distant. I may be wrong but to me, stop means just what the word indicates. To come to a halt, stand still, not moving further.
I sometimes wonder if these persons are employed and if so what's their job status?

  12. I do not think some of us understand what we read. As a pedestrian you have to look out for yourself.
So much ignorance to be read by the world.
