Police have confirmed that one man has been arrested and will be charged soon for the robbery of tourists at Soufriere Diamond Falls.

According to a press release submitted at noon today, the individual arrested for the robbery has confessed to the crime in a written statement to police, and that US currency, believed to be proceeds of the robbery, was recovered from the man.

Police said two other individuals suspected of being involved in the robbery are now in custody.

Below is the full statement released by the police on the incident

On Friday, April 12, 2013 at about 12:45 pm, officers attached to the Soufriere Police Station responded to a robbery incident which occurred at the Soufriere Diamond Falls.

It was confirmed that four masked men armed with homemade shot guns and pistols entered the said premises and robbed a number of persons who were on the compound at the time. Those persons were visitors to the island aboard the cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse, which was berthed at the Castries Harbour.

The men systematically searched the guest as well as their belongings. The masked men robbed them of monies, jeweleries, cameras, and cell phones and escaped in the bushes behind Diamond Waterfalls.

A search was conducted in the nearby bushes and surroundings by the Soufriere police, but to no avail.

On Saturday, April 13, 2013, acting on information, Soufriere police apprehended an individual who has since confirmed his involvement (in a written statement to police) in the robbery of the said cruise ship passengers. A sum of USD$105 was recovered from his person.

On Monday, April 15, 2013 two other individuals were taken into custody under the suspicion of Robbery.

In total, 60 passengers of the said cruise ship were on tour at the Soufriere Botanical Gardens. Thirteen passengers were robbed as well as three local tour guides who were accompanying them.

Apart from the trauma of the incident, none of the persons robbed were injured.

Charges are expected to be laid on the individuals in custody shortly.

Investigations in the matter continue.

  2. I am about to the visit your island very soon and feel your best defence of valuable jobs is for all citizens to be vigilant and never fail to report the villains. In many cases they must be known - drunks and druggies especially. Keep after the swine, don't give them time to plan anything.
    Good luck.

  3. Don't applaud shit becausethey didn't do any work or proper investigations. Someone on the street said is jack and they went to get jack beat his ass so bad that jack had no choice but to write a confession saying it was him and name others for his blows to stop. What if jack has a good lawyer and some strong alibis to place him and his friends else where on that day. What if they can also prove that they were beaten to confess to a crime they didn't do. It's because we St.lucians accept any form of shit for good police work instead of them doing a good job with the proper investigating skills we praising this. I live to see the day a murderer sues the state and the police for doing this type of shit and walks away smiling. Not because they are innocent but because we don't do things the right way.

  5. I must applaude members of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force for a job well done, however I am at a lost to understand why an area like Diamond Falls did not have adequate security personnel on the ground to protect the very visitors that sustains them. Visitors and security goes hand in hand, the first order of the business is to ensure that security is in place at all those areas where our visitors congregate to ensure their safety. A special unit must be set up within the Police Force specifically to work with the tourist industry to provide constant patrols and visits to those key areas of tourist related activities. i.e north, west cost, and south. A list of names, addresses and photographs of all persons convicted of criminal acts against our visitors should be posted so that the community would know who they are, and to report their activities when seen in the areas.

  6. DESTROYING THE PARADISE. THE NUMBER OF NEGATIVE FEEDBACK THIS IS GOING TO GIVE ON CRUISE CRITICS ON AN ALREADY BAD ECONOMY. WHAT A SHAME. I HOPE THEY GET A MAXIMUM SENTENCE FOR THEIR INVOLVOLMENT IN THIS CRIME.

    • The negative publicity has already began. Trust me when the tourist return home I doubt that they will market the island. In fact, the many thousands on the cruise ship have already been advised. Do you think they will be back after this experience-no way. I am sorry to say but these ignorant St. Lucian THUGS are the islands worst nightmare. The island will suffer tremendously as a result of these despicable acts.
