UPDATED: Alleged burglar shot dead by taxi driver with licensed firearm

 Share This On:

A 34-year-old mechanic died after he was shot by a 73-year-old licensed firearm holder while allegedly trying to break into a minibus parked in the shooter’s private residence in Soufriere minutes shortly before midnight on Saturday, Dec. 6 , reliable sources have told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).

Claudius Dominique Alexander of Fond Beniere, Soufriere, also known as ‘Irie Lion’ and ‘Ti Peter’, ran and collapsed near Captain Hooks restaurant and bar after he was shot by a taxi driver in a residence off the Soufriere-Castries Highway.

A source said the gunshot appeared to have entered Dominic’s shoulder and exited through one of his armpits.

The alleged burglar reportedly operated a tire shop near a used car parts business at the top of Church Street, Soufriere.

A resident told SNO that the community has been plagued by a series of burglaries and vehicle break-ins.

The resident also said the deceased is alleged to have previously broken into the home and vehicle of the licensed firearm holder on several occasions, and is suspected of “robbing a car next door” recently.

A blogger with knowledge of the incident said the taxi driver and his family have been targets: “I feel extremely sorry for Mr. (name withheld to protect the firearm holder) whom I know very well for having to find himself in such a situation at this time bur my God, that family have had to put up with so much over the past few weeks with regards to their homes being burglarised. They were once held up at gun point in their own house and robbed of their valuables and a week later a female teacher who lives next door suffered the same consequence together with other families and their household in that area. That  neighbourhood have had to put up with way too much and maybe who knows my parent’s house could have been next.”

  6. When will you people learn to respect other people's opinions in here?People have a right to write and express their opinions without being hassled by the many of you who are full of right wing nonsense.
The majority of you in here are of the opinion that the licensed gun holder was right to shoot and kill the fellar.I noticed someone expressed their views against the killing and all hell broke lose. Everyone has an opinion and it should be respected-- Not matter whether it is for or against the killing--- Respect other peoples view Lucians.

      • Exactly what she just spoke about you guys dont respect other peoples opinion. it is just an opinion, either you agree or disagree and give a constructive state argument for your position without the use of degrading terms and let it be... and i know most of the times the people who are considered to be the higher ups in society who make such rebuttal statements with no validity. Enjoy your day Are you Serious. Cause im left to wonder are you really serious.

      • Oh btw i beg to differ. UWP and SLP, how many wings are there? IDK you tell me.

        (0)(0)
        • What/who exactly defines what/who is Left and or Right Wing? Bcuz I believe a certain way about something doesn't give anyone the right to label me Left or Right Wing. Like labeling ppl too much.

  8. For those who say the man was wrong to kill the thief. You should read the the article carefully. He was shot in the shoulder and the bullet exited his armpit. Wen you learn to shoot you are to aim for the torso. So I say well done. If he wasn't the he wouldn't have been the target. And enough with the bullshit bout the vehicle owner being tried in court, you hypicrites.for too long the home owners have been victims... today the tables are turned.

  10. As far as am concerned i have no big issue with this shooting incident, however i hope that the license firearm holder did the right thing by calling the ambulance and making them aware that he had shot someone, and didn't allow someone else to do that cause if he never did then his intention may have been to allow him to died, which if is the case is not humane and have to face some consequences for his actions. ppl sometimes make that grave error and believe because it is a thief then thats ok, its never ok killing anyone without justifiable reasons it cannot be right eg. (if you are in danger of losing your own life then you have the right to defend yourself which is common sense and reasonable) . In my view as much as property is important to protect, a human life is worthy much more than any property. As long as u able to see the thief then u already have a case, especially if he is not masked. Let the police deal with the issue as much u can:don't be a foolish hero.

  11. Let me join my voice with that of "Love" and "Cock san pwel". I don't think they are condoning the robbery. We live in a civilized society - or so I'd like to think; it is not OK for us to dispense justice as we wish. It's disheartening for me to read the comments and sentiments being shared by the majority of you; it's like a human life has no value. Sure this guy may have been a thief; but he didn't deserve to be killed. Anyway the Bible did say that in the last days the love of many shall wax cold.

None the less, I do hope that the gentleman who shot the robber can find peace. My heart also goes out to him and his family.

  12. This taxi driver as you call him, is a law
biding citizen, who has the courage to defend
his home family and property, he has the right
to protect what is his by any means. There is
a saying, there is nothing in someone house that is worth loosing your life over it, this thief enter without permission he deserve what he gets.
Those bleeding hearts that are quick to condemn should walk in his shoes before opening their mouth. Some call the thief a
good boy! good boys do not steal, violate, or
terrorized others, he get what he justly deserve. It is unfair for thieves to rid honest citizens of their precious possession
and think it is justify. The St. Lucia I knew has change and not for the better.
I know this Honest Law Biding Citizen He is
    my Brother.

  15. My grandfather is about that age and owns a small business. To this day he is still up at the Crack of dawn working hard. One evening he pulled into his driveway and some thieves were laying in wait. As soon as he got out of his vehicle, they pounced on him, robbed him and sliced his arm with a knife. He owns his licensed firearm on but didn't anticipate the attack. This is an ageable man, they were trying to stab him and his arm got in the way. So to the idiot talking about excessive force I guess if this happens again my grandfather should wait to see if after robbing him, the bandits will stab him or shoot him so then he can be validated in discharging his firearm , which was legally licensed for this very purpose! Oh gosh, I swear sometimes I think we have more morons in our midst than criminals. Cock San Pwel, get a licensed firearm and please kill yourself!

  16. I would do the same if a thief comes to steal at my house. face the law, i ll gladly do that after the thief is dead. bravo. to the shooter.

  17. "Love" who ever you are. Do you know the gentle? If you know him pretty well then your choice of words"ego" do not fits this man 's profile. It is convenient to quote the commandments. Do forget the 8th commandment. Thou shall not steal.

  20. So unfortunate how we value life in our country. Some one is dead and people are rejoicing. Thou shalt not kill, how we are so fast to forget the word. No one has the right to take life, in this case I do understand that the killing may not have been intentional, i certainly hope so. stop acting like the man is a hero. My condolences to both families. As mr annto has a conscience and his super ego is now fighting with id and ego.

    (0)(0)
  21. It's amazing the level of hypocrisy in this country and on this forum. The idiots you see no wrong in this thief being shot are thieves themselves. The person who made the comment that he takes all his values out of his vehicle I hope he takes all the parts from his vehicle and lock them in house also. The thing is when you have never been rob or wake up on a morning to find your car is missing and your house is broken into.
I guess it is is fine for the thief to carry an illegal fire arm and rape someone family but it is not fine to be a license firearm holder. My friend until you become the dictator of this country my constitution give me and every citizen the right the to protect and defend his life, family and property. Do you know the facts of the shooting? Do you know where and how the thief was standing? Are you aware that he could have shot the thief in the head if he wanted to.
To conclude let it not be you I will shoot even your flipping shadow.

    Chucky.

  26. A thief can kill if you surprise him in your home or on your property. He comes expecting not to be seen. You wake up and catch him, what is he to do? Remember he does not want to be caught. He comes in with no weapon, but there are many things in your home which can be used to harm you. You are on my property or in my home without invite, then you are in violation. What must I do, ask why are you here? I have every right to assume you are up to no good and do everything possible to protect mines. Just imagine the justifications! Unarmed, not posing any harm? People must be out of their minds to justify these act of terrorism.

  28. I'd like to punch Cock Sans Pwel in the throat! Clearly you've spent too much time in the UK and the rain has washed away all your sense! So out of touch and ridiculously PC! Get a clue! You call this thief a 'poor bloke'? You've romanticized his pitiful existence?? Yet no regard or sympathy for this family who has been terrorized??!!! I hope you have as much sympathy for the thief who robs your home and holds your family at gunpoint. I hope you go visit him at WANDSWORTH and put money on his books! People like you SICKEN me!!

  31. The man is justified cause he was protecting his property.Bravo man its high time these people learn to respect other peoples property especially when you work hard for what you got. Job well done.

  32. How will this man be able to live in the small town of Soufriere after this killing? He drives a taxi and may have to drive past the family of the young man he killed. How will he even be able to look them in the eye? This young man who was killed was someone's son, brother, uncle and daddy. He was snuffed out for entering into a silly car.

Alright he was not suppose to have entered into the man's car without permission, but that does not give the owner the right to shoot him dead. Most certainly not. Why didn't he call the police in the first instance? The police could have dealt with this. There was no need to use deadly force. This licensed firearms holder may have wanted to avenge for the previous burglary he suffered at the hands of bandits and hence the reason for the fatal shooting.

In a place where everyone knows everyone there was no need for what took place today. The bullets could have missed and killed an innocent bystander. What would happen then had the intended target got away? Imagine having to walk around Soufriere town and having to face the victim's family. How will he be able to sleep at nights knowing that he has killed someone? This is a senseless killing.

Is he a trained marksman or sniper? The state should ensure that someone who is given a firearms license undergo full training beforehand. The training should be intense and rigorous. Too many idiots are carrying weapons and don't have a clue about the harm they can bring to others with these arms. To them it feels like a toy.The poor bloke lost his life to a licensed idiot who most probably had no training in handling weapons. He must face the consequences as the force he used was not reasonable force. It was brutal and fatal. The law allows for reasonable force to be used only when your life in under threat. The shooter's life was not under threat. Not at all.He went too far.

  64. How can anyone justify this killing? Please tell me. No killing can be justified unless it is in self-defense. This was clearly not the case as the man who was killed was not armed by all accounts nor was he about to open fire on the licensed gunman. The poor bloke lost his life just for entering into a car.

I have a car and when I am not driving I removed all my belongings in there. I do NOT leave any valuable items in there. So if someone were to break into my vehicle then there isn't much I can do nor will they find much. They are not going to find anything of value. Should I see them trying to get into my car without my permission I will confront them and should they get angry and nasty towards me I will call the police.

The police should be called at all times when people are breaking the law. No one should take the law into their own hands. This man had no right to do what he did. Where are we going with vigilante justice in St Lucia? One silly mistake cost this young man his life. Why didn't he shoot the man in his leg instead? If he felt threatened then he could have disable him in some way untll the police arrive. He did not have to kill him. As far as I am concerned this is murder and the police and CPS should file murder charges against this assailant. He should not get away with it.

Are these licensed firearm holders trained? If the state is going to issue licenses to people then they should ensure that they are properly vetted and trained. I still think that ordinary citizens should not carry weapons. The police should be the only ones carrying arms and not just any police but a firearms unit that is fully trained. My Condolences goes out to the family of this young man. Such a waste of life at such a young age. This was uncalled for. Life is precious... more precious than any car or valuables in it...Thou Shall NOT kill!

    (0)(0)
    • first of all what kind of ridiculous name is that you are using? Secondly you need to shut up if you have nothing to say. go you stupid ass and confront the person trying to break into your car for them to shoot you in the face . you know people talk alot of shit until it happens to them.

      (0)(0)
    • Cock san pwel you need to wake up from that dream of yours and realise that you are on earth honey."The poor bloke lost his life just for entering into a car": he has no business entering a car that he does not own.

Your second paragraph: you can remove all the valuables you want the car is the most expensive thing retard. I would like to see you dial 911 when the thief is beating you senseless when you confront him.

Again I will say to you. WAKE UP FROM YOUR DREAM BUDDY.

      (0)(0)
    • Ppl have a right to defend their life and property as per the laws of Saint Lucia. And he 'lost his life just for entering a car'? I think you need to rethink your post. Should the taxi driver have waited to verify whether this thief had a weapon? You could not have thought this through before you posted.

      (0)(0)
    • The police who never have transport?
The police who have no finger print database?
The police who only move for drugs?

      ROTHLOL

BTW for murder to stick the State must prove intent. As the man was shot in the shoulder that murder may not stick.

      (0)(0)
  65. Some idiotic comments on here defending this criminal. Obviously the shooter's intention wasn't to kill since he shot the thief IN HIS SHOULDER! It's also stated that this family has been held at gunpoint and their home burglarized! Clearly this man is terrified and frustrated.
Where is he going with a Gun? He's a liscenced firearm holder and has a right to carry his gun as he pleases!
SNO also CLREALY didn't name the gun holder, yet readers have posted his name in comments... I just can't understand people's logic...

  66. Who knew? U have ur own shop maybe over pricing ur customers and all this time ure profiting on making someone else's life miserable. U never paid for what u stole but u charge for what u steal. Such is life! No matter what part of his body he got shot, if help doesn't reach in time he would die. I don't know this man personally but I understand the ordeal he and his family had to endure overtime because of some potential thieves. Who knew? Business man daytime, thief at night. And for the above comment, please someone in ur car after midnight and u think that he might have thought that's his car. So the dead man forget the color or type of vehicle he drives. Be sensible ppl.

  67. This is not about material things. It is about people's peace of minds. When someone violates your safety and security, take control of your home, family and possessions, do you know what that does to someone mentally and emotionally. The thieves are not just taking material things, they are messing with your life. Criminals are unpredictable, whilst in control, they can decide to do a lot more than originally intended. Must we wait and see what
they decide to do next or must we protect our lives and family by any means necessary. These criminals are terrorizing people and putting us in positions to do things that is not of character.
the victim is now seating in the police station awaiting a decision that will change his life. We need to stop defending criminals even if they are our family and friends. Their actions change lives.

  70. To those saying "Why was such deadly force used" and "the shooter should be put to sentenced and prosecuted as a murderer" In my honest opinion..have it all wrong. Take into consideration, that this man is a HUMAN. It is then that all the emotions come into the mix, fear, anger, frustration. This man's family has been robbed more than once.. at gunpoint, IN THEIR OWN HOME. Would you be able to take it? all that frustration from the same thing happening over and over, the fear of you and your family's lives being in danger cause you may not know what the thief said or had. Also the anger reflected onto the thief cause now the shooter can make a difference with his registered fire arm. Despite all of these factors.. the man did not shoot to kill..but to injure.. and the thief died..so now all those who have "prosecution" in mind...think..what would i have done? not as a just civilian... but a human..who is tired of this happening to them..and trying to protect their family..

Nice country, where u can kill a man who his used no threat on your life...and almost everyone is shouting for joy........am wondering where was that vehicle parked....on the road or in a garage.....what if that bullet didn't hit home and killed a neighbours baby in the crib.....that's too much force...its not proportionate to the threat......something just a few level headed lucians can understand.

The persons saying it was unjust of the taxi driver to defend HIS property from being stolen most likely have never been robbed before, so they don't know the heartache, the violation, the vulnerability, the helplessness one feels. Like the saying goes, whomever feels it, knows it. And it's not a good feeling. So until you've worn those shoes, you shouldn't comment. If you're been robbed before, but still feel what the taxi driver did is/was wrong, then you're entitled to your opinion; keep being a criminal defender.

  86. The dead guy is not the victim. The shooter is the victim and indeed he felt his life and that of his household threatened. Who knows how far the criminal would go that night. The shooter is a law abiding citizen, who have never gotten himself in trouble with the law, but today finds himself sitting in a police station. He is being victimized all over again. So the criminal's criminal acts are not over yet. That is the sorry they bring onto families, when they decide to go out and hurt and terrorize people. You have to protect your family by any means necessary. A liar is a thief and thief a murderer ( potentially) it comes with the job. Must we wait and see which he chooses to be that given night, especially while in the act?

  87. Sad that the licensed firearm holder may b charged n may just do sum time or have x amount of money to pay in suitable surety for taking another's life but this sure as hell sent out a message to other criminals not only in Soufriere. The others will think twice about who they rob because now they won't know who is carrying licensed or unlicensed firearms. To those opposed of this man's reaction to being burgled, unless you're in the situation you cannot know what YOU would do especially if you've been terrorized just weeks before. Its all good you can stand on the outside and say what "correct" procedures can be taken but unless you can walk in this man's or any other robbery victim's shoes, not glorifying his actions, but you should think twice before talking because you do sound insensitive towards not only this robbery victim but to all those who have been terrorized who may see this as justice being served.

    • Wait till you see what you have worked so long and hard for disappear before your eyes, time and time again, then you can give your two cents about material possessions. You can just leave your house unlocked when you leave then, or better yet leave your door open, After all these are just 'material possessions'.This is becoming the norm all over and i hope that the other robbers are deterred. I am not praising his death, but enough is enough with those thieves.

      (0)(0)
    • This has nothing to do with American culture and customs. I my time growing up, remember people chasing thieves in the streets of St. Lucia with stones and cutlasses. No one wants their possessions, whether material or not, which they had to work hard for and sacrifice for, stolen by anyone. So anyone in any country who harms or kills a thief is adapting to the US culture? Are you serious?

  113. S2Blawyer, from souf

My perspective and moral view is that criminals are to be brought to justice for their heinous crimes. They are to be awarded a fair and just trial and have the opportunity of serving time for their criminal conduct. I also believe that criminals are entitled, and, should gain a second opportunity/chance at life within the society. Therefore, any logical and pragmatic person reading this would realise that I am of the idea that this man should not have been shot and killed.
The Law states that someone has the 'right' to protect himself or someone else or property, in danger of harm and destruction, respectively. So did the man who shot Claudinus Dominic, whom I presume felt that maybe his life or property was being endangered. However, given those circumstances the law also states that the force used to protect oneself should be equally proportionate to that of the risk posed by the accused. Basically saying if the accused had no gun aimed at the defendant (the shooter) he would have no right to use such force on the victim. To add to this the individual did not shoot the man in his leg or anywhere near that, since i am a reasonable and prudent person i think others reading this would agree that where he aimed and shot the victim could be viewed as a virtual certainty that the Claudinus would have died and that the consequence of his act was highly probable beyond a reasonable doubt. Hence, to conclude I believe although this gun is registered it does not provide immunity against the law, I hope the shooter is brought to questioning and if the police deems it necessary, should charge this man with Murder. Since, their is motive, intent and the Actus Reus of the crime, further more Self defense cannot be used since I already debunk it which would most likely equate to Criminal Liability and a convicted murderer. Well, hope the shooter isnt related to me and that nun of my relatives would be as dumb witted to do such a thing. God Bless Saint Lucia and the Lucians who reside in it.

    (0)(0)
    • I share the same sentiment.

      (0)(0)
    • One also has to take into a account that his home was broken into multiple times and no justice was brought forward for obvious reasons (lack of a suspect). You made mention that the force has to be proportionate to to the risk involved in the situation and since the thief was not pointing a gun at the owner then he should not have been shot. But lets be realistic counsel, you own a gun and find someone on your property, you will leave your gun holstered until the intruder presents his/hers first. If they present theirs first... you're dead! The gentleman in this case could be panicking but everyone makes mention why not shoot in the leg. It is not easy taking a shot at someone's legs. The law as it stands seems insufficient in protecting the rights of the home/ property owner.

      • S2Blawyer, from souf

To be honest I dont have sides in this case, I'm just a student of law i saw some of the relevant facts were posted and as students we are suppose to learn the law try to apply what we learned to real life situations if we can, to better understand what we have learnt. As i said i dont believe in senseless killing and tht everyone deserves a second chance. I learned that he was an elderly man not to long ago and this in fact could justify his inability to fend off the thief/attacker, providing him a just reason to use such force. But as many point out all relevant facts was not provided... I never intended to offend, just applying what i learned.

@Real Lawyer, it is not a matter of showing off sir/mam and as most who know me can contend, boasting is not my forte nor is it something I entertain from people. But i understand where you are coming from in actually some statements I made did have some of its characteristics, but you were once a student and you must know as many students who study your profession we all tend to fall prey to this monster called showing off. But thanks for the advice, next time ill take a note book as one person stated and right my thoughts in there. (0)(0)
    • Since you mentioned a moral perspective, here is a scripture to meditate on SB2Lawyer from Souf: "When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting." Proverbs 11:10. People, neither Jehovah will never be happy with wickedness. Yes, Jesus wants all to have an opportunity to come to repentance but remember it is a choice.

    • I'm trying to imagine you Mr/Mrs Lawyer person in the similar situation. I imagine that it would be something like Lawyer: "Stop stealing my vehicle please, the police are on their way please leave my vehicle alone."

If you approach then you have to think of if they are armed. If you take too long to react then by the time the police get there the vehicle would be long gone.

This man deserved to be shot but not killed, lawyers and the justice system are the problem not just in St Lucia but the world, most of you are hypocritical, insensitive and understandably believe you know everything. Get off of this forum.

    • To charge him with murder, intent must be proved. From what I see the teef was shot in the shoulder.

      May be manslaughter.
But if they put us on the jury - he will be found NOT GUILTY.

      (0)(0)
    • There was no mention of any witnesses; dead man can't talk. You don't know what really happen so how can you turn the poor old man into the criminal?

Maybe he did feel like he was in danger, from all the stories of other robberies happening these days.

Force should be equally proportionate? Why they give him a firearm license? So he can use for world war 3? Why the police walk around with them? Only for when criminals point a gun at them?

No he didn't shoot him in the leg but how you so sure that's not where he aimed for? Have you ever fired such a weapon? Do you know his competency as a shooter? People talk such crap about oh why he didn't shoot him in the leg? why didn't he disable him? There's a phrase people used in the past "Hollywood really lying" This ain't the movies bruh. I feel extremely sorry for Mr.Anno whom I know very well for having to find himself in such a situation @ this time by my God, that family have had to put up with so much over the past few weeks with regards to their homes being burglarized. They were once held up @ gun point in their own house and robbed of their valuables and a week later a female teacher who lives next door suffered the same consequence together with other families and their household in that area. That neighbourhood have had to put up with way too much and maybe who knows my parent's house could have been next.
Mr.Anno we are proud of you and our support goes out to you and your wife cause we all know the trauma that you and your family recently suffered @ the hands of these lazy ..who refuse to respect the lives and property of others. To those from Palmist and Fond Benier, they know themselves I say "One down more to go.Watch this space cause Mr.Anno don't play." 128. Oh No that is terrible! Why was such deadly force used? Snuffing out someone's life for breaking into a vehicle is just not on.What is this man doing with a firearm in the first place? I do not care whether it was licensed or not. No one should carry firearms in the state apart from the police. Where are we heading when people are licensed to kill?

The police should have been called in this incident. The police station is not that far away and the cops could have dealt with the situation by taking the young man in without him having to lose his life. If the victim tried to break into the home of the licensed firearm holder before - Why wasn't the police called? If there was evidence then he should have been arrested and brought to book.

Shooting someone dead is not the way to go. Violence is not the answer. This shooting should be classified as murder as it looks pre-meditated. The shooter should not be getting away with this. The man should not have broken into the car but by the same token the bloke with the gun should not use deadly force. Just the other day the police chief warned about people taking the law into their own hands. This will get us nowhere. We are not living in the jungle where anything goes. We need to allow justice to take its course.

Soufriere is a small town where everyone knows everyone. The police station is not that far away from where this happened. The police could have easily been called. Why didn't he call the police? I feel sorry for this young man and his family. This is a terrible tragedy. All of this just for going into a car. I am not saying that he should break into the car - He most certainly should not do that. But the car owner should not kill the man for entering into his car- He should instead call the police to deal with the matter. Right now the police should press charges against this person - This is nothing but murder and he needs to be tried for this ghastly act.

    (0)(0)
    • When it's your home or vehicle is broken into, I hope you still stick to your opinion.
Premeditated is, for example, you're in a fight, leave to go home to get your weapon, then return to shoot the individual you fought with. So how can this be pre-med?

      (0)(0)
      • Premeditated is when you are aware of a situation which is likely to occur again and instead of warning the police you decided to take things into your own hands and had the requiste mens rea or intention to cause a particular harm.

        (0)(0)
    • Precisely. I did not condone the acts of the young man but for sure, the man who shot the victim dead needs to be tried in court.

Although you have a different name, you are still writing the same old crap. I can smell you from a mile away. Gasson (bloke), the burglars nowadays are generally armed. The victims intentions are normally to get out of a bad situation unscathed. When that joker was caught stealing the man's livelihood in the middle of the night, the victim acted on the side of caution. He had a fear for his life and he acted upon it. The voleur was shot in the shoulder...what's wrong with that? The bullet may have tumbled and damaged tissue and organs. It's not the driver's fault. By the way, St. Lucians have been allowed to carry weapons to defend self and property for generations. Where have you been?
