UPDATE: Suspected suicide in La Croix, 61-year-old victim may have felt lonely

A sixty-one-year-old man was found hanging from a rope in his bedroom at his Belair, La Croix Maingot residence at about 6:55 a.m today (July 2).

He has been identified as Ephrem Boullie, a security guard of M&C who is suspected to have committed suicide.

The body of the father of four was discovered by his five-year-old granddaughter.

Delia Boullie, daughter of the deceased, said she received the news that her father was found hanging and rushed to the scene.

Delia told St Lucia News Online (SNO) that her sister Talifa Boullie who was living with the deceased at the time had sent her daughter to ask her grandfather if he had wanted them to collect some test results from the doctor which he had done a few weeks ago. The child ran out saying that her “Dada” was still asleep.

Talifa recalled that she later went to check on her father and found him hanging from the roof with a rope around his neck and a stool at his feet. Delia stated that her father showed no signs of depression and claims that the family knows of no possible reason for a suicide.

Talifa told family members and others gathered at their home that she did not suspect anything was wrong as she had last seen her father around 7 p.m. Tuesday night and he appeared to be normal. However, she recalled hearing coughing in the wee hours this morning, but did not bother to check as she did not suspect the worst.

Lyra Thomas Joseph – sister of the deceased – told SNO that it has been a rough period for her brother since he lost his wife about three years ago and his sister earlier this year. Joseph said she would call him every morning to check on him and he would sometimes complain of being lonely, but she did not expect this outcome.

  3. I am saddened to hear of this. I knew him fairly well and spoke to him on occassion about his family who are very nice people. I never had a clue that he was going through all this. If I had any inkling I would have reached out to the man. Depression is a very serious illness and though I am no medical professional a Cuban Psyhicatrist once told me that St Lucia has a large number of untreated cases of depression and that it was approaching crisis proportions. It is about time that we take this more seriously and create a task force on Mental illness. Maybe then will we see a reduction in useless suicides.

  4. Depression is a dangerous thing losing a love one makes it even worst. Losing his sister and wife within three years may have sent him into a deep depression and set him off. May the lord have mercy upon his soul. My condolences to his family hope they get the strength to deal with this tragedy.

    • Boy, who feels it knows it. Only those who have gone through it know that type of loneliness. It is hole in your heart that seems to have no bottom. To have loved ones die, never to return. Yes I know, some will say you are not strong, but it is the very "strength" that everyone expects you to have that breaks you down. That loneliness you feel, its like no matter how you try you can never explain to anyone but those persons that you have just lost. Don't judge him for his perceived weakness, only his heart knew what he felt. Who feels it knows it believe me,this is a true saying.
