A Guyanese-born construction worker who was working on the new St. Jude Hospital construction site in Vieux Fort died as a result of an injury he sustained at around 2:30p.m yesterday (July 15).

Julius Ferguson, 50, of Doe Carmel, La Resource, Vieux Fort received a cut to his throat from a small grinder.

Ferguson’s relatives told St Lucia News Online (SNO) that the father of one has been working at the site since the inception of construction back in 2009. He was at the time employed with Sadoo & Company Construction.

His cousin, Vernice Bastien, told SNO that the family received a call from Ferguson’s colleagues informing them of the incident.

According to reports, the grinder may have slipped from his hand and connected with his neck. The injury caused him to bleed severely. It is believed that he died on the spot.

Relatives said he was taken to a local mortuary after the incident.

“If someone had a door to repair or a window to fix, he would always be there to help,” she added.

Ferguson has been a construction worker and joiner for many years. He has been living in Saint Lucia for over 18 years.

He leaves to mourn his father Bartholomew Ferguson, daughter, Tekshika Ferguson and a two-year-old grandson.

    • Safe grinders are equipped with a guard around the grinding disc so that in the event the wheel or disc flies off the guard shields the human body. Apart from having the proper equipment, supervisors should keep daily safety meetings with the workers to educate and remind them of safety issues. In addition to all that, the safety rules must be enforced. On large construction projects, a safety supervisor is a must.

  3. All construction workers of OB Sadoo Engineering are equipped with safety gear. Julius Ferguson was a good worker. Not sure what happened on the day but everyone is deeply saddened by his death.
    My condolences to the family.

  8. Construction workers need to be equipped with safety gear such as safety glasses and goggles, face shields, harnesses, steel toe boots, hardhats. Had he had a face shield on, his life could have been saved. Whoever is responsible should ensure that contractors are qualified and equipped with proper safety gear for the protection of their employees.

  9. All those RIP are so superficial and so empty.
They offer absolutely no comfort to those left behind to use any of those EMPTY WORDS and use them to help them cope effectively with their LOSS and suffering. Those useless words are not filling in the gaps in their needs now or in their future. Most of us are exceedingly heartless with our profuse use and sharing of just empty words. Nobody said let's make a fund to help the family in any way. That is so painful. RIP my big toe!

    • You speak for yourself, but for no one else. How do you know we are not sincere when we say RIP? Just bcuz people did not offer to start up a collection for the family doesn't mean people don't care. AND FUNNT THING IS, I NOTICED YOU DIDN'T OFFER TO START ONE UP EITHER. Looks like the pot calling the kettle black.

    • Are you aware how ignorant you sound? I guess not because if you did, you would not be making such a fool of yourself here. Thank God for anonymity because you would be wearing the dunce cap in the class. So just because someone does not give money means that they expression of condolences is insincere?

  13. It so sad that our ppls mentally is focussed on mapwi for the government of SLU...lately everything that happens is their fault. Our heart and sympathies has to be with the family at this time. And from what i read of the family member statement...it was just a freak accident.

The employer didn't do anything deliberate to cuz the death. I do agree though that the company should pay some sort of insurance claim to the family to help.

may his soul rest in peace.

  14. May his soul rest in peace. Why do some of you'll chose when someone dies or someone is robbed ,to come talking about government this or government that. Why don't you all go to their offices and voice you'll opinions. You'll cowards, talk, nonsense get out and allow sensible people to make appropriate remarks.

  15. You realize that a grinder was not designed for the blade to fly out. Therefore there was a problem. All problems needs investigation. Right or wrong? Or else its like this. A man was working with a grinder. The blade flew out and slit his throat. Man bled to death and was buried. Therefore man died like dog. Do you want the next dog to be you?
