Levern Donaline Spencer became Saint Lucia’s first ever Pan Am Games champion on Wednesday, clearing 1.94m to take gold in women’s high jump at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Spencer, a bronze medallist in 2007, had a clean card up until 1.91m, with compatriot Jeannelle Scheper and Caribbean competitors Priscilla Frederick and Akela Jones in hot pursuit.
Scheper, struggling with injury of late, could only manage 1.88m for fifth. Jones set a Barbados national record of 1.91 for bronze, Frederick set an Antigua-Barbuda national record of 1.91 for silver.
Spencer, just turned 31, cleared 1.94 earlier this month in Madrid, and she did it again in Toronto to top the all-Caribbean podium. Saint Lucia has only ever had three Pan Am medals, two from Levern.
Team Saint Lucia has now completed competition at the Pan Am Games.
