Boat captain charged for causing the death of Cowboy

Switten ‘Smitty’ Marius of Canaries has been charged for causing the death of Sylvester Prosper AKA Cowboy of Soufriere who died as a result of a boat collision at the Soufriere Waterfront on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

Police said Marius, 34, was charged on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 and is scheduled to make a court appearance on Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Second District Court in Vieux Fort.

Police said a post mortem examination conducted on the body of 69-year-old Prosper on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 revealed that he died as a result of “hemorrhagic shock secondary to blunt force trauma”.

According to a police press release, on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at about 4:35 pm, officers attached to the Soufriere Police Station responded to a report which occurred at the Soufriere Waterfront.

On arrival, officers received information that a 17ft 8 inch fiberglass boat named “Champion” had collided into another 12 ft 7 inch wooden boat named “Psalms 23”.

The fibreglass boat was being captained by Marius, At the time, Prosper was the lone occupant on board the wooden boat.
As a result of the collision, Prosper was pitched into the sea and was submerged for about 15 minutes before he was rescued.  He was transported to Soufriere Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

  1. A boat like a car has to be used responsibly or it can be as dangerous as a gun in the hands of a fool....the laws to protect citizens are on the books but have no teeth or manpower to enforce them....at a slow speed as is safe and practical........Olay....this ones for you

  2. murder????? did he think to kill this man before it happened? I'm wondeing whether a charge of Criminally negligent manslaughter would have sufficed?

  3. It's high time these boaters/captain understand whenever u are in a bay, the bower pf ur vessel must be dropped in order to see whats ahead (careless boating)vvvvvvery slow Yo

  4. I expected that. How can u hit another boat in broad daylight n call it accidental. How could u not see it?
