PRESS RELEASE – The Soufriere Kid’s Development Child Care Centre was awarded the certificate of recognition as an organization of Excellence at the 2014 Black Canadian Mayoral Forum held on September 28, at La Royal Banquet Hall in Ajax.
The award was presented by the Mayors of Oshawa, Town of Whitby and Ajax to Mrs. Vera Mercier, founder and Executive Director of Soufriere Kid’s Development Child Care Centre for being an exemplary role model as well as developing an “Outstanding Institution of Pride” in the community of Ajax, Ontario, Canada.
Mrs. Vera Mercier is a proud St. Lucian who came from humble beginnings in the town of Soufriere where she was raised under the watchful eye of her mother.
Mrs. Mercier migrated to Canada in pursuit of achieving her goals, to strengthen the bridge between, work and family life by creating a special place that supports them both, as well as to create a school that would assist in development of children in the area of French, while simultaneously offering a service that would benefit the wider community.
This prompted her to create the only French Bilingual Child Care Centre in the Durham Region, and thereafter has partnered with various Schools to teach children French from the early ages of 18months to 12 years.
SKD’s Bilingual Child Care Center’s mission is to support bilingualism as well as reading, writing readiness and to provide a high quality of early childhood care for children that attend this institution.
SKD Child Care Centre also offers a summer camp program that specializes in French.
Mrs.Vera Mercier continues to be a beacon of light to all St. Lucians, young and old and is a prime example that nothing is impossible to achieve once you have God on your side, the drive and focus to achieve your goals.
When asked what important message you would like to say to the young aspiring St. Lucians, she said “Focus on what you want, follow your dream until your dreams become a reality.”
