The much anticipated second face-off between league leaders Laborie Lab Techs and Black Bay Basketball was awesome Saturday. 13 3-point field goals were scored on the night, 9 by Black Bay Basketball, 6 by Shawn “Squirms” Auguste, and 3 by him in the 4th quarter alone to help seal the victory.
It was an all around commanding performance by Black Bay Basketball Saturday, winning 86-68, with excellent ball movement initiated by point guard Derocher Antoine — self titled Magic Johnson reincarnate.
It was Derocher Antoine’s passing which helped to dismantle the Lab Techs’ defense in the first half. After two quarters the Lab Techs found it difficult to remain in their customary zone defense with Black Bay raining daggers from behind the arc, or finding cutting forwards in the paint. They switched to a man-to-man defense in the 3rd which helped to stem the bleeding, caused in large part by Black Bay’s Shawn Auguste.
Shawn August was on fire from early Saturday, scoring 12 of his 26 points in the first quarter. But it was the 4th quarter that the Black Bay small forward was huge.
Just after Lab Techs sharp shooter Carson Alexander hit a long bomb to start the 4th and ignite a scoring run which brought the home team finally within single digits of the lead, the young man caught fire and sizzled. Shawn Auguste hit trey, after trey, after trey, 3 3-point field goals, one of them from distance behind the arc to smother the Lab Techs hopes of regaining the lead.
Still the Lab Techs had an opportunity to get back in the game in the 4th, when attacking the basket they were awarded with several opportunities to close the score behind the charity stripe. But their free throw struggles on the night, 16 of 37 (43%), dwindled such chances.
The Lab Techs also struggled from behind the arc scoring only 4 on the night, 3 treys all in the 1st.
The Laborie Derby has ended 2-0, Black Bay Basketball convincing victors in both games.
