Bids invited for rehabilitation of several roads

04_Road constructionPRESS RELEASE – There is good news for farmers in several communities, as four major agricultural feeder roads are set to receive attention, under a project being funded by the European Union (EU).

The rehabilitation of these roads will be a very positive development for the vital agricultural sector.

The Office of the National Authorizing Officer has formally solicited bids for the rehabilitation and upgrade of roads in Bois Canon, Micoud; Morne Cayenne, Vieux Fort; Cardi/Compare, Dennery; and Mighney-Derache, Soufriere.

The goal of the project is to improve the motorability of roads used by farmers in the affected areas. This will help consolidate the gains made in the agricultural sector in recent years, and improve access by farmers to their farms, particularly those who continue in the banana sector.

The Government of Saint Lucia has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to bolstering local banana cultivation. Bananas remain the island’s main export crop, accounting for approximately 20% of all export earnings.

Under the EU Agricultural Transformation Programme (ATP), financing is being provided to the Government of Saint Lucia at a cost of EC$37 million, to support what is known as the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM).

The tender dossier is available from The Office of the Banana Industry Trust Corporation, Unit #11 American Drywall Building, Vide Boutielle, Castries. The relevant bid documents have also been published on the Government of Saint Lucia website at

The deadline for submission of tender is February 23, 2016.
