Bed bugs, damaged furnishings, and lack of computers plague CID

Officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Castries Central are fed up with poor working conditions.

An infestation of bed bugs, dilapidated office furnishings and malfunctioning computers are some of the issues interfering with the work flow of the officers.

The majority of the department’s computers were damaged during an island-wide power outage in May this year. At present, only two computers in the front of the office are operational.

Sources say about seven officers work per shift. This means that only two computers are available for seven officers on each shift, which puts a strain on recording information and investigations.

“Also there has been an issue with chairs or persons in need of assistance/making reports,” a source said.

Sources told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that the poor working conditions have been communicated to the management over a period of time but nothing significant has been done.

“These men (senior officers) not feeling it so they can say what they want. Constables are the ones being squeezed,” one of the sources told SNO.

When contacted for a comment, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for Crime and Intelligence, Milton Desir, said he is aware of the issues and they are being addressed.

Desir said he had requested and received a list of the furnishings needed in the department. He said this list was submitted to the persons/s responsible for procuring the items and he was told that they’re out of stock and the items must be ordered.

Desir said he hopes the items – virtually all the furnishings in the CID office – will arrive soon to ease the burden of the officers.

The acting ACP also confirmed that he held a meeting with the officers of the department and gave them an update on what management is doing to solve the problems.

But SNO sources said some of the officers have been fearful of speaking out.

“The thing is it affects us all and no one seems to be saying anything about it. They just complain to each other,” one of the sources added.

  7. There are many different types of bed bugs. The health department of St.lucia should investigate which one it is.You can get some of them through sexual activities. They can be transported from our home into the work place.First,of all we should not have published such reports to members of the public. The police can be look downwards in that regard.Bugs has been researched as a sexual transmitted disease.Supposing,i decides to point fingers at our police officers when they are walking in public?

    • be careful you might point a finger and they might think is a gun.....so don't point nothing.

  9. Guys are you kidding me? The persons whom you should contact is you Police Association. This is a case where your wimpy chairman should fight on your behalf. To say that the constables are fearful is crap. This is a welfare issue, haven't you guys heard of officer safety? Oh no I remember now, all the Association is concern about is more money and not welfare. Mmmmm

  10. The furniture should have no bearing on the officers work, this is a situation repeated the world over. If you want to work you will work, if you want to be lazy you will complain.

    (0)(0)

    • The furniture has everything to do with their level of work. Would you want to sit on a chair and desk infested with bed bugs? Your answer to that will be no. You would not want to transfer these quitters to your home and family, so don't you say that furniture has nothing to do with their work. Guess what nowhere in the world would staff tolerate these working conditions.

  11. MANY OF THE OFFICERS IN THE CID DEPARTMENT ARE "ARMCHAIR DETECTIVES" SITTING AND WAITING FOR CLUES TO COME IN AS TIP-OFFS FROM THE PUBLIC AND DO LITTLE FIELD WORK.
FOR EXAMPLE YEARS AGO WHEN I MADE A REPORT TO CID OF THE VANDALIZATION OF MY VEHICLE, THE CID OFFICER LOGGED MY INFORMATION AND TOLD ME TO CALL HIM WHEN I HAVE ANY CLUES.

  20. The deplorable working conditions of the CID is a reflection of the condition of several units and departments of the RSLPF. Police are treated the worst among public servants and society expects the most of them, especially in this environment of crime and more crime. So Lucians do the math - poor working conditions + demotivated police officers + weak police managers + a clueless, thin skinned minister = an environment of increasing crime, such as that being currently experienced.
