Barbados: Man caught with stolen mattress in Bridgetown

(BARBADOS TODAY) – A 39-year-old man, who was caught red-handed carrying a stolen mattress through The City, has been remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital.

Anderson Sylvester Als, of no fixed place of abode, took the $100 mattress from the Hurd building on November 22 after breaking in.

Police, responding to an alarm, spotted Als carrying, on his head, the stolen item, which belongs to the James Street Methodist Church, along Tudor Street, The City.

“Officer I got that bed from that building,” Als reportedly told the officers at the time.

“His [criminal] dossier does scream and shout at you,” attorney-at-law Mohia Ma’at told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in reference to his client’s previous convictions for drugs and burglary.

“He steals spice, fishcakes . . . . He takes little things to support his habit, which began back in 2006 and since then he has been on a downward spiral,” Ma’at said, while requesting rehabilitative help for the unemployed man.

“It is a case of David and Goliath and he is facing a giant that he can’t fight on his own,” the lawyer added.

However, the magistrate made it clear that Als must accept that he needed help and stay the duration of the drug rehab programme.

“I will see it through Ma’am,” Als quickly said, agreeing to a three-week stay at the Black Rock hospital for assessment.

He returns to court on December 14.
