ATM thieves suspected of hitting banks in the north

 Share This On:

A group of men are suspected of stealing people’s ATM card information in the north of the island.

Reports are that the men installed a flat portable ATM card receiver at one bank’s ATM machine, which recorded users ATM card information.

“The ATM machine would give you your money, but the thieves would have all your information and make a similar card to withdraw or make online purchases,” a reliable source confirmed.

St. Lucia News Online (SNO) understands that a fraudulent portable fitted ATM card slot apparatus was removed by technicians from the ATM machine, after it was discovered by a customer.

The customer discovered the portable apparatus, because it was slightly protruding out of the ATM card slot. It was also sprayed with the same colour as the ATM machine and was stuck with some adhesive.

Reports are that the cameras were reviewed by the police and the bank’s management, where they were able to identify that a group of men were responsible for installing the ATM card receiver.

No one has since been arrested. The matter is being investigated by the police.

  1. Unfortunately, it is easy enough to quickly and discretely install readily-available PIN skimming apparatus in 24-7 ATM's, it is worldwide, be wary, you get a call from Courts for a living-room of furniture that was paid for on your card, no furniture for you, it already gone.

One more reason to do bizness either with pre-approved auto debit on an account-specific basis or to withdraw de bit of ting weekly for buying groceries ya no.

  2. They have to replace the ATM cards

  3. The authorities should have pictures. All they need to do is use the media to get these out in the public. Someone will recognize them in due time. Banks should institute a policy of daily inspections. They should be accountable for the peoples losses.

  5. Hi:
It's amazing to hear of ATM crimes in my island, St. Lucia. The last time I was in St.Lucia was 17yrs a go. The island has developed and advanced in many ways to provide services for its citizens...as a result, crimes are on the rise.
Thanks to St Lucia online for providing the heart beat and pulse of the island.

    • your money is insured with the banks. So if you lose money and can prove your money was stolen talk to them. Keep your receipts when you make withdrawals...Also what happen to cameras at ATM machines?

  9. I honestly think that the English guy that was arrested with all the ATM cards and card readers have something to do with this. He might have been a decoy to let the other cards and readers pass. But NO!!! We had to let him go and now look what is happening to our hard working citizens. SMFH.

    • Nonsensical! This is no reason to steal. Tings ruff? cyah blame the youts? Wat bull! Our parents faced even rougher times and never reverted to doing this stuff. No justification for this criminal offense.

  25. That's why I don't use them even if I own them. I may use one only for emergency. I rather do business the old fashion way. ATM' s can save time but one's loss is valuable time put at work and hard to regain.

    (0)(0)
    • yes but the way the banks are charging now for going to the bank teller. its still saving some money by using the ATM. scotia bank for one charges $5 for using the bank teller. so if I have many transactions for the month you know how much I would be paying just to withdraw my own money.

      ridiculous.

  26. These cases are seldom heard of in developed countries. Why small St. Lucia ?

  27. The Banks used to have this feature on their doors... whereby you have to insert your "valid" card into the slot, in order to enter the ATM Premises. What Happened to That?
This feature was in place at ScotiaBank, and Bank Of St Lucia, But have been Removed!..... Bank Of St Lucia Rmoved theirs about a Month ago! WHY????

With the Onset of all of these crimes, Why were these Featured Disabled?? ...
    What are the Banks Thinking?

Are they in on it too? Especially now we know that a "Consumer" had to bring this to their attention?

    (0)(0)
    • Anonymous let me see if I can assist you. The features were disabled because the same devices can be placed in the door slots to steal your information when you use your card to open the door, Ok? you got it?

      (0)(0)
    • Let me try to assist you Anonymous. They disabled the feature because the thieves can place the reader device in the door slot and download the info from your card when you use it to open the door Ok? you get it?

  32. Well what do you expect?

We have absolutely NO immigration policy.

We have a Government who appears to avoid referencing the word "Immigration".

But slowly and slowly, this island is being destroyed due to the refusal of the government to touch on this matter.

  33. That sounds like Nigerians. We have an influx of Nigerian students on island. They are famous for those types of crimes.

  35. I cannot believe that this kind of crime has reach St Lucia. In Canada and the U.S. this has been going on big time. The banks are trying all kinds of technique to prevent criminals from doing this. Banks in St Lucia now have to go and check all their Atms and remove all those illegal Atm receivers that the criminals are placing. In the end the banks have to replace all the monies that have been withdrawn with those Atm receivers. So they better act fast and provide better protection for citizens who are using those Atms.

Hey Dude you can spot them by just making sure nothing is sticking out or has been placed on the card reader.

Also check for cameras directly over the keypad since they can be used to sniff the pin after they get the info.

There is also a keypad that can be placed over the original keypad to sniff pins. Just be observant..Good Luck Dude.
