ARC+ 2016 comes to an end

PRESS RELEASE – The picturesque Pigeon Island Landmark was host to over a hundred sailors who came to celebrate their achievements on their trans-oceanic adventure that began in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria via Cape Verde on Wednesday, November 6th, 2016.

Welcomed by the sounds of sweet steel pan music and a steady flow of rum punch; crews were awarded with prizes in a variety of categories.

Officials from ARC+ Rally Control and the Saint Lucia Tourist Board presented the awards to this year’s fleet. Lagoon 450 Flybridge Spirit received the first place prize, crossing the finish line at 07:23:56 local time on Tuesday 29 November. Her crew of Keith, Claire, Nigel, Dirk and Bailey the dog were all delighted to arrive after almost 13 days at sea following their departure from Mindelo, Cape Verde on Wednesday 16 November.

Other notable accomplishments highlighted were the arrival times of “Keeping the Spirit Crew Company” and the largest boat of ARC+ 2016, Masa Yume, which arrived 19:09:39 local time. It was followed by Sea to Sky, Baby Blue and Opptur, which all arrived within 90 minutes of one another.

Wednesday evening’s prize giving ceremony was followed by the welcome cocktail for the ARC. This main event is now in its 28th year. The 2016 ARC comprised close to 200 boats, 70 of whom have arrived so far. In his brief remarks, Minister of Tourism, Hon Dominic Fedee reminded participants of the economic benefits that the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers provides to the people of Saint Lucia.

The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers will culminate with a prize giving ceremony at the Beausejour Indoor Facility on Saturday, December 17th.
