PRESS RELEASE – The Ministry of Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment is once again partnering with the Organization of American States and Development Cooperation Fund (DCF) to sign an Agreement for the Implementation of the OAS/DCF/GOSL Program “Social Protection”, to be executed by the Ministry of Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment.
The signing ceremony occurred at the office of the Ministry on July 30th 2015 and was attended by officials of OAS, Ministry of Economic Development and Planning, representatives from the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities and the National Council for Older Persons.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation Ms. Juliana Alfred emphasizes the importance of coordinated work among all Ministries, agencies and stakeholders.
She noted”As per the Ministry’s mandate we are supposed to provide assistance to vulnerable persons in the country. We must ensure that our services are accessible to those persons and this makes this project very important. The project allows the vulnerable group of persons with disabilities access to economic opportunities for generating income.”
At its meeting held on April 27, 2015, the Management Board of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation & Development approved an estimated contribution of US$130,000 for the Programme’s Implementation which includes capacity building and economic empowerment.
OAS Administrative Assistant Ms. Celia Pierre stated that”the new DCF invites regional and national and international actors from both private and public sectors to join the effort by combining resources to achieve more results which will aid sustainable development in member states. I am certainly pleased to participate in this signing ceremony of the agreement for the implementation of the OAS DEVELOPMENT FUND COOPERATION AND GOVERNMENT OF SAINT LUCIA PROGRAMME, “SOCIAL INCLUSION”.”
The general objective of this signing is to create opportunities for productive employment among vulnerable groups.
Lancha Isidore representative – National Council for persons with Disabilities expressed gratitude for the project“Persons with Disabilities form part of our groups in society. These persons are most times excluded from society and so this project would be extremely beneficial to such persons. I think it is important to integrate them to society.”
The Ministry of Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment embraced the venture.
