(SNO) – Former Opposition Leader and Education Minister with the United Workers Party (UWP) Arsene James has died.

He was 73.

James reportedly passed away at a hospital in Martinique around 3 a.m. on Sunday, July 29 after a prolonged illness.

The UWP paid tribute to James in a Facebook post: “We regret the loss of Hon Arsene James who has departed from this life. Mr. James distinguished himself as a statesman of extraordinary ilk. His life epitomized “service” – as a community leader, teacher, principal, Parliamentarian and Government Minister. Let us pray for his family and friends, that God will comfort them during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”

James represented the Micoud South constituency for the UWP and became Opposition Leader when UWP leader Morella Joseph did not win her seat, in the December 2001 elections.

He served as the Minister for Education and Culture under the government of Prime Minister John Compton from 2006 to 2011.

James decided not to contest the 2016 General Elections and his Micoud South seat was eventually represented by party leader Allen Chastanet who went on to be victorious and become the prime minister.

St. Lucia News Online sends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Arsene James

  1. When one dies ,his life and deeds are all over. There is no need for others to wish him good or evil for his judgement is set.In light of this biblical truth we need to be civil in our assertions or judgements of each other.
It is better to remain quiet than to speak evil of one who has passed. Be humane and do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.

    Sympathize with those who mourn.

    Love is stronger than hate.

  4. I would like to apologise on behalf of all the ignorant St. Lucians who are using a man’s unexpected death for a claim to fame. if you have nothing positive to say be quiet and let our family mourn in peace. No one expect you to understand the loss we are dealing with at the moment. Have some respect for a dead man and most importantly yourselves.

Please allow us some time to process and grieve this unfortunate event at this point in time before you indulge in the usual negative comments now synonymous with some St Lucians

  19. Everyone has a view as to why political commentary should not be added to the conversation, but that's a silly view. The man though dead was a POLITICIAN. It is obvious that persons will have varying views about his life. Who wrote the law that death should automatically garner emotions of love and tolerance towards anyone? Please keep your emotions in check and deal with REALITY. People are also entitled to their OWN VIEWS.

  20. May your soul rest in eternal peace Mr James

  21. Politics has made us so angry, uneducated, heartless, disgusting and inhumane that we can't even see when it is necessary to just shut up if we have nothing good to say. Do we have heart surgeons down here who specialize in open heart surgery?, do we have cancer specialist who can remove cancer tumors and treat cancer here? do we have the proper healthcare facilities which are specialized in anything and also the doctors and staff who are specially trained to man such? When I hear people like ya'll talk I truely see how ignorant my people are and how much they allow politicians to manipulate them. Even if St.Jude's was finished you think it would have been equipped for this or like this? That's why I'm in total support for the PPP of your healthcare once we can get these specialized people here and also get a proper working insurance scheme in place then I'm down for it because I for one wouldn't mind paying extra for myself, my family who people can't afford and even some poor or unemployed person to get such healthcare. Because once you have to go out and get such care that isn't or can't be provided here then the cost triples or even quadruples. I'm not saying it will be perfect but at least we can work at it cause what we have now AIN'T SHIT and that's a fact whether it's St.Jude's or O.K.E.U.

  25. I am just asking. What is his claim to fame? In what way or ways did he advance education in Saint Lucia? I would really appreciate very honest answers.

    (13)(55)
    • He served the country and the people. Whatever small the contribution you should be thankful. Some people like you don't lift a finger to push your country forward.

      (36)(5)
    • Claim to fame? He was my Principal for 5 years and an amazing one at that. He laid the foundation for my incredible success in the United States and for that I will forever be grateful.

      (31)(3)
      • Good. Do more like these. Some people want to know, the lasting positive impact on the whole country and the education system.
