781 persons living with HIV in Saint Lucia

(SNO) — Saint Lucians are being asked to get tested so as to know their HIV status as the total number of persons living on island with the virus now stands at 781.

The Ministry of Health, over the years, has been pounding out that message with force, however of late the voice carrying out that message is that of Acting Senior Medical Officer for Infectious Diseases, in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr. Gail Gajadhar.

Pleased that the number of new cases over the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 has basically remained the same: 46, 42 and 44 respectively, the doctor has renewed the call for Saint Lucians to come forward and be tested.

Her tone seems to take on an urgency to it, as a breakdown in the numbers living with the virus shows that men numbered 408, women 330, while the remaining 43 being listed as unknown.

St. Lucia News Online has been able to gather that the number of new cases of HIV infection each year does not equal the number of persons who die as a result of the disease for the same year.

In fact, the new cases are much higher in number to the number of persons who pass away, a situation that may very well have to do with the free medication afforded to persons with the virus on island, thanks to a grant from the Global Fund that deals with eliminating sexually transmitted diseases by the year 2030.

That grant, which was given to the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in April 2016, will end in the next six months, however the sub-region is currently in the process of applying for a continuation of that grant so as to continue the work it is engaged in regarding the reduction of HIV within its borders.

  1. I hope some of yall stay as angry about rape instead of saying its just sex and telling people children they "must have like it". so many rapists in saint lucia. and they spreading these diseases.

when ppl forcing sex on somebody, its not just that they forcing. ppl having to consider abortion. ppl having to live with n spread disease because saint lucians like to blame the victims of rape and shame them so they can keep their boyfriend, husband, brother, cousin, friends who are rapists free. so who would get tested. go and tell them someone rape you and watch doctors and nurses shame you and say you fast.

let there be a heavier jail time or preferably death sentence for rape and you'll see the rates of out of wedlock births, violent crime, youth rebelling to gang activity, children acting up and aids cases drop rapidly. rape not only affecting the person that was raped, it have issues for all of society at all levels. if you want to find the rapists around you, just say a teen girl was raped and watch what they say. a beast and a normal man not responding the same. they will jump to say 'these girls lying or they fast' so start using your brain and start asking yourselves why they quick to say that. that would be the type spreading diseases and cheating on their wives.

  2. Sin has a payday
Stolen waters are sweet but they can be poisonous
Be faithful one to an other
Teenagers take your time ,I know the hormones are flaming but don't let them burn down your future. Some things in life are irreversible so careful of the choice you make. We have only one body in this life so captain it well upon the sea's of life. Get tested ,when you do be faithful one to an other or be celibate.

  3. There is certainly more than 781 cases. There are many persons who have not been tested. About a decade ago the figure stood at 781. It cannot remain the same now. If everyone was to be tested in St.Lucia, the figure could be approximately between 6000 and 7000. This I can assure you is factual.

    • From your tone, you seem to think that HIV infected people are responsible for their infection. There are many innocent victims. Included in the statistic are babies, children who have not engaged in sex and who are infected by mothers who may not have engaged in sexually risky behaviour nevertheless could have been infected by their partner. What about the (male and female) victims of rape who may have been affected by their rapists, should they all be further traumatized and stigmatized? Individuals who know their HIV statuses are not the ones who cause concern but the sexually irresponsible individuals who know their behaviour is risky and that they may be infected but do not care about their health nor the health of others.

And imagine thts only reported cases!!!there might b hundreds more cases out there.there is so much behavior going around.alot of young women sleep with older guys to survive because cost of living is so high &good paying jobs are few.poverty is super high.smfh.alot of married men also fuck young women to support them n to feed themself what they dnt get at home.thise young women spread those diseases to other partners n likewise the men.and all of this goes vice versa.too many social ills!even those persons who put tattoos in shops that aren't licensed or professional can gt the disease.there is so much bs happening n u at home will do ur utmost best to not live that kind of life and then bam your partner slips up!scary scary!

  7. My Goodness.....That's a lot of people with HIV for little St.Lucia some of our women are hooking up with foreigners from different islands different countries without knowing their back ground no blood work, no condoms, reckless behavior not smart. Some of our men are doing the same sleeping with white black men for money and
after their tryst go sleep with their partners so the spread never stop. We need some intervention 781 is too much that is scary, please be on your guards if the carriers know that they are going to sleep with someone please wear a condom, some of them knowing they have it they will try and sleep with as many other people deliberately not nice. Very sad times sad indeed we have to look out for our little ones who cannot explain about what's happening to them because them big azz negroes can infect them by statutory rape and their parents do not have a clue, okay I'll stop because I can go on and on please be careful everyone, trust no one.

    • Why try to blame it on foreigners? Women in St.Lucia are NASTY! They have how many sexual padners... from one man to the next. It’s not foreigners that coming and give them HIV... it’s among themselves they contracting it. Maybe they should start keeping their legs closed.

  9. PEOPLE GO GET TESTED. BETTER BE SAFE THAN SORRY. AT LEAST YOU WILL BE ON MEDICATION TO LIVE A LITTLE LONGE
STAY WITH ONE PARTNER OR NONE.
HAVE SAFE SEX. USE A CONDOM EVERYTIME YOU HAVE SEX OR ABSTAIN.
STOP ORAL SEX. THIS NUMBER IS TOO HIGH FOR OUR POPULATION. I AM SURE 50 TO 100 MORE CAN BE ADDED TO THAT FIGURE FOR THOSE OUT THERE WHO HAVE IT AND DONT KNOW . STAY SAFE....GET TESTED.
