The Government of Saint Lucia notes with deep sadness the passing of Mr. Peter Phillip, former Member of Parliament for the Gros Islet Constituency and Minister of State in the 1982 to 1987 United Workers Party Administration. Mr. Phillip’s passing is a definite lost for the people of Gros Islet and the Government of Saint Lucia.

The former Member of Parliament will be remembered as a “Trailblazer” who achieved the feat of bringing home the Gros Islet Constituency to the United Workers Party for the first time during the General Elections of 1982. This achievement opened up the way for other successes including the current Member of Parliament Hon. Lenard “Spider” Montoute who won the seat convincingly in the 2006 General Elections.

Mr. Peter Phillip was an astute businessman who started his business career as a life insurance underwriter with the British American Company before becoming the Resident Manager for Rentokil (St. Lucia) Ltd. Pesticide Company. He acquired this company in 1980 and refashioned it into a new entity which he renamed care Services Ltd.

Peter Phillip was a very active community worker through his participation in the St. Lucia Jaycees and the Rotary Club, St. Lucia. He also made a major contribution to carnival celebrations either through his involvement as a band leader, costume designer, or in the administration of the festivity through the St. Lucia Jaycees. Mr. Phillip was a family man and a devoted community activist.

During his representation as Members of Parliament, the village was elevated by the then United Workers Party Government to the status of a Town.

The Government of Saint Lucia shares in this deep loss with the people of Gros Islet and extend profound sympathies to the family and friends of the late Peter Phillip during this period of grief. Mr. Philip will be remembered for his humble spirit and the dedicated and selfless contribution which he made to the people of Gros Islet and Saint Lucia in general and as a Parliamentarian and Minister of State within the 1982 to 1987 United Workers Party Government.
