Beefing up technology in police force to fight crime
National Security Minister, Guy Mayers says the Government is continuing to use technology in its quest to fight crime in St. Lucia.
The minister made that disclosure while addressing the graduation ceremony of recruits to the Royal St. Lucia Police Force and the Bordelaise Correctional Facility.
“We will also be providing surveillance for our porous borders, to enhance the work of our marine police; the forensic lab will soon be in operation, which will assist us with our crime fighting efforts, also the witness protection programme, and also improving on the facilities for witnesses to give video evidence and statements, so that they don’t have to face their accusers in court,” Mayers said.
Mayers said the Government is also undertaking a number of measures to beef up the human resources, and upgrade the equipment of both the police force and correctional officers.
Earlier this year, the minister, along with Police Commissioner Ausbert Regis launched their crime fighting strategy to curb criminality on the island.
The plan included both short-term and long-term measures, which involved continuing police raids, demolishing derelict buildings, improving lighting and installing CC TV cameras in strategic locations around the city.
Recently the police received five new vehicles, donated by the Taiwanese Government. They have also been promised speed boats, and other equipment such as tazers, breathalyzers, speedometers, finger printing machines and the like.
