Fishing policy discussed at high level meeting in St Lucia

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana-based Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat says issues pertaining to the CARICOM Common Fisheries Policy have been discussed at a high level meeting in St. Lucia earlier this week.

It said the Ministerial Council of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) met to discuss sustainable fisheries development as mandated by the Council following a meeting in Suriname in March.

Apart from the common fisheries policy, the St. Lucia meeting also discussed the draft Declaration on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, as well as matters related to the functions of the CRFM Secretariat.

An official statement said that the Ministerial Council “mandated the CRFM Secretariat to work in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat to review to finalize the existing draft for presentation at the Third Ministerial Council Meeting in October 2010”.

It said the highlight of the meeting was an agreement IUU fishing “which demonstrates the region’s determination and commitment to protect the economic interests of CARICOM member states and to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by enhancing the effectiveness of monitoring, control and surveillance at the national and regional levels by creating and sustaining the necessary harmonized and contemporary legislative and regulatory regimes.

“The Declaration would also serve as a useful tool in the mobilization of resources to develop and implement the national and regional plans of actions to combat IUU fishing.”

My best friend is getting too close

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Dear Bella: I think my best friend is falling for me. I believe she is getting too close to comfort and I am worried this can jeopardize a good friendship based on my experience.

I love her a lot, but I don’t want to get intimately involved with her and then things just end up being weird. I also have a girlfriend and she knows that, but lately she’s been giving me these unusual looks and touches. I mean we hug, play and joke around, but I can just feel like these are new feelings developing. She knows me like the back of a book like I know her very well. We share everything and talk about relationships. How can I let her know that I just want to remain friends?

Trying to save a friendship.

Dear Trying to save a friendship,

Simply ask your best friend if she likes you more than just a friend because you’re sensing that her way of behaving is different around you. If she admits let her know how much you cherish you friendship and that if she cherishes it too she will respect your stance on the matter.

Make her aware of how you feel, and that you don’t want things to complicate the relationship you already have. Sometimes the best friends make the best lovers. However, sometimes an intimate/sexual relationship with a close friend doesn’t always bode well.

Bella.

ALIVE WORD: The Love of Money – Part 1

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The Richardsons

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

1 Timothy 6:10

Some people often misquote the Bible by saying, “Money is the root of all evil”.  However, this is not so.  Money is not a want, it is a need.  The LOVE OF MONEY is however the root of all evil.

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians wrote “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11  In 1 Timothy 6:6 it states “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” One of the keys to a life of peace, especially as a Christian is contentment.  You may not have all that you think you want but remember that God has promised to supply all you need.  “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

The choice to be or not to be contented is the one that determines the lives that some live and the corresponding actions of many.  My dad always told us not to be jealous, envious or covetous but to be thankful and contented.  You may see many changing cars frequently, building mega houses, and from head to toe may total about a thousand dollars, but you never know.

There is a prevailing problem in our territory and it is one of greed and covetousness.  Too many people are trying to not only “Keep up with the Joneses”  but to far surpass the Jones, at all cost and in the process are losing their integrity, and bringing themselves and their families to shame, not to mention helping to populate the local prison.  If it is not yours, don’t take it up and employees that includes office stationery.

But God is saying to all of us today that we need to be contented.  Now, being contented does not mean that you have to drive your 1980 Honda until it is practically falling to pieces and being a noise hazard when you drive it. It is not a sin to get a new vehicle, a new home, a wife, a husband, a business, a new wardrobe.  The important thing is not what you acquire but how you acquire it.  Be sure that what you obtain is by legal and honest means.  The Bible does not lie and in Numbers 32:23b it states “…behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.”

You see, God is the one keeping record, but sometimes unknown to you, so are the legal authorities.  God sees and God knows ALL THINGS.  Man may not know and man may not see the bribes, the thefts, the under the table deals, the forged documents but God sees and if you obtain things dishonestly or through illegal means it is just a matter of time before EXPOSURE and shame comes.

Do not sell your soul to the devil and lose your soul in hell, just to have money and own possessions.  Do not allow the almighty dollar bill to become your God.  It is not worth it.  It is not everything the glitters is gold and if you know an activity is illegal, unscrupulous and dishonest, no matter how much money is being offered or promised do not get involved in it.  No matter who all is getting away with it or has gotten away with it, you might just be the one who will not.  “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent.” Act 17:30

Some people think that Christians are to be poor, live in small houses and drive old cars as an act of humility but that is un-scriptural and a wrong mindset.  The Word of God says in 3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth”.  In addition to that, God has made a promise to those who answer His call on their life and are obedient to him.  In St. Mark 10:29-31 it states “And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.”

However, the Bible warns against covetousness.  In St. Luke 12:15 it states “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

I’m falling in love … but he’s married

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Dear Bella: I don’t know what to do. I met this really nice guy and he is married, but the thing is he doesn’t have a relationship with his wife at all.

They live together and they have kids, but they don’t have a relationship. They have been having problems long before I came in the picture.

He is really, really nice and I think that he has fallen for me, and I have fallen for him too.  He will tell me that I light up his life and things like that and the thing is I believe him because he is an honest man. He told me that he wants to get out of the relationship, but it’s hard because of his kids. The kids don’t know that he and his wife are don’t have any relationship, and he is worried about them.  I don’t know what to do because I am falling for him too. I need some advice please. Thanks.

JB.

Dear JB,

Just because you claim that he and his wife has no relationship is no justification for you to get intimately involved with him. Saying that “they have no relationship” does not extract from the fact that they are still married. It’s true sometimes you can’t help who you fall in love with, but you can take steps that will not allow you to get into deep.

You are only contributing to this man’s marriage demise. You should be encouraging and advising him to try to work things out with his wife, instead of embracing his compliments about you lighting up his life. What you need to do is to end this intimate emotional relationship with him, if it has not gone further than that, I hope, and if it has end it anyways. Besides it is adultery and you’ve already opened the path for an adulterous relationship.

I’m sure there are many single guys out there with less drama than which you have involved yourself in right now. If the marriage should end let it not be because of anything you did.

Bella.

Project Education gears up for final fundraising push

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

NEW YORK—Organizers of the New York based Project Education are close to reaching their fundraising goals, though more help is needed as time runs out.  For the final push, they are looking to Saint Lucians and well-wishers in the Diaspora to help make this fundraising effort a success.

Founded earlier this year by Jeremiah Hyacinth, Project Education gives overseas-based Saint Lucians a unique opportunity to donate school bags and supplies to less fortunate children in Saint Lucia.  Already, almost two hundred school bags filled with school supplies have been collected through this initiative.

“We are on the verge of meeting our goal,” said Hyacinth. “With the continued generosity of our donors, the scope of our project and our ability to make a lasting impression on the lives of children will be that much greater.”

To complete this summer’s campaign, organizers are offering Saint Lucians in the tri-state area an additional opportunity to contribute. On Sunday, August 1, organizers will host a fundraiser at 719 Remsen Avenue in Brooklyn, New York from 5pm-midnight. Free food will be served to show thanks and appreciation.

Indeed, Project Education organizers thank the many donors who have already contributed and encourage every Saint Lucian, particularly those residing overseas, to collaborate with us on this worthy cause. It is a clear investment in the future of our country.

“We can change lives,” said Hyacinth.  “Providing a child with basic tools at the start of the school year is one of many ways Saint Lucians both at home and abroad can change the life of a child for the better.”

At the end of this year’s campaign, on August 31, the collected school bags and supplies will be delivered to a local non-profit organization for immediate distribution in Saint Lucia, just in time for the new school year.

“Looking ahead to next year’s campaign,” said Hyacinth, “we will aim higher.  Together, I know we can help many more of the children of Saint Lucia, ensuring the next generation of citizens is well-prepared to meet the unique challenges of the 21st century.”

SLP launches website

Ex lover wants to reignite an old flame

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Dear Bella: My boyfriend of 3 years who broke up with me wants to get back together.

We were really going down a bad road in our relationship and he had major issues trusting me because of infidelities in previous relationships. He also was leaning on the controlling, possessive side. It was getting so frustrating that we decided to part. However after six months he’s telling me that he wants things to work out, but he was intimate with someone. I never did anything with anyone since we’ve broken up and neither have I gone out on any dates.

He already cheated on me countless times while we were together. Should I give him another chance?

In Two Minds.

Dear In Two Minds,

It’s time to move on. You should also let your ex lover know that as well. It doesn’t make sense being with someone who you can’t trust and who can’t trust you either. You will have a hard time achieving happiness, and maybe you should focus your attention on someone who you don’t have so much of a messed up past with. Just don’t rush into anything with anyone who you’re not sure about and will end up hurting you again.

HEALTH TALK: Triggers of migraine and other headaches

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Your Boss

Anything that increases your stress level makes you more prone to tension or migraine headaches. Tension headaches apparently result from a heightened sensitivity of nerve pathways in the brain that relay pain. Migraines result from changes in the brain itself. During a migraine, brain signals cause the release of chemicals that change blood vessel diameter. The signals also activate inflammation in the brain, which can cause a migraine headache.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Warm Weather

The likelihood of migraine or other severe headache increases with the temperature. One study found a 7.5% increase in headache risk for every 9 degrees of Farenheit.  Low barometric pressure, which often precedes rain, was linked to a small increase in non-migraine headaches.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Strong Scents

Strong smells, even nice ones, trigger migraines in many. We don’t know exactly why, but the odors may stimulate the nervous system. The most common culprits are paints, dust, perfume, and certain types of flowers.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Hair Accessories

How you wear your hair may affect your head. A tight ponytail may strain tissue in your scalp, causing a hairdo headache.  Headbands, braids, and tight-fitting hats can produce the same effect. Letting your hair down usually brings fast relief if this is the cause of your headache.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Exercise

Strenuous exercise, sex included, can cause exertion headaches. In this case, blood vessels in the head, neck, and scalp swell, causing a build-up in pressure. Examples: jogger’s headache and sex headache. These types of headaches are most common in people who are prone to migraines.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Poor Posture

Slouching at your desk will do as much as working up a sweat to build pressure in the head and neck muscles. Poor posture includes hunching your shoulders, using a chair without lower-back support, staring at a monitor that is too low or too high; and cradling a phone between your ear and shoulder. Check your workplace if you get frequent tension headaches.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Cheese

Aged cheese, including blue cheese, cheddar, feta, mozzarella, parmesan and Swiss, is a very common migraine trigger. The culprit is tyramine, which forms when certain types of protein break down. The longer a food ages, the more tyramine it contains.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Red Wine

Tyramine is also found in red wine and some liquors.  Alcohol increases blood flow to the brain so the effects may be more intense. Take a preventive dose of medication if red wine is a trigger for you, if, say, you’re going to a cocktail.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Cold Cuts

Processed meats are undesirable for two reasons. 1) They often contain tyramine, 2) They contain the food additives nitrates or nitrites. These additives increase blood flow to the brain in some people. Headaches caused by food additives are usually felt on both sides of the head, unlike in classic migraine, which is usually on one side at a time.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Skipping Meals

This can cause your blood sugar to drop, depriving your brain of the only source of fuel it can use. But don’t try to cure a hunger with a candy bar. Sweets cause blood sugar to spike and then drop even lower.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Smoking

Smoking can trigger headache in the smoker and the second-hand smoker. Nicotine is the culprit; it causes blood vessels in the brain to narrow which is the process at the start of a migraine. Reduction of exposure to nicotine helps particularly cluster headache sufferers. Cluster headaches are extremely painful headaches that occur in groups.

HEADACHE TRIGGER: Caffeine

Caffeine is, in fact, found in many headache medications. But chain- chugging coffee can be a cause of headaches. If you’re hooked on caffeine, cutting back abruptly can worsen your headaches; caffeine withdrawal is a headache trigger.

HEADACHE SOLUTION: Identify Triggers

Identifying triggers can help you prevent headaches. The best way is to keep a headache diary of foods you eat, stressful events, weather changes and physical activity. You can find patterns, and avoid your personal triggers.

HEADACHE SOLUTION: Manage Stress

Stress-busting techniques can help you to manage migraines. Meditation, massage and acupuncture – if   you can get it – can be experimented with to find what works for you.

HEADACHE SOLUTION: Stretch Your Legs

Moderated exercise relives stress. Walking is a great defence against tension headaches. Swinging arms relax neck and shoulder muscles, breaking up shoulder knots which cause tension headaches.

HEADACHE SOLUTION: Eat Regular Meals

This means not getting hungry and keeping up blood sugar. Drink enough too; dehydration is another common headache trigger.

HEADACHE SOLUTION: Physical Therapy

This combines exercise and education to reduce pain and improve range of motion. For tension headache, physical therapy can strengthen neck and shoulder muscles and give you new habits that lead to better posture.

HEADACHE SOLUTION: Medication

Drugs like Aspirin and Ibuprofen (NSAIDs) relieve many types of headaches. But avoid continuous use, to avoid overuse headache or rebound headache. Talk to doctor about the different medication options, especially for migraine.

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See him/her for unusually severe headaches or those lasting more than a couple of days. Let doc know if your headache pattern changes, like if there are new triggers. If your headache comes with paralysis, confusion, fever, or stiff neck, seek help.

See you next week.

Technical failures at utility companies affecting LIAT’s operations

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, July 27, 2010 – Regional airline LIAT said recent technical failures from various utility service providers within its network have been negatively impacting its operations.

The company is pointing out that it has been experiencing some difficulties in its communication network, as a direct result of the technical failures at the utility companies.

LIAT listed three recent developments which it said had significantly affected its operations and on-time performance. These included:

1. The failure of a local loop, which is the link to LIAT’s distribution system;
2. A lightening strike, knocking out one company’s network resulting in disruptions to access to LIAT’s ticketing and distribution system;
3. Fluctuation in the power supply at one company causing severe damage to one of LIAT’s uninterruptible power supply systems. This caused LIAT’s main servers to fail.

The company said that in a number of instances its check-in operations and city offices were affected by the technical failures and this in turn negatively impacted the processing of passengers.

The company’s management has indicated that LIAT continues to work with its utility suppliers to rectify the problems.

Home Partnership Fair gets underway

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

One of the major activities for the Saint Lucian Homecoming started yesterday Monday 26th July following the official opening of Saint Lucian Homecoming 2010.  The aim of this fair is to facilitate increased participation of the Diaspora in skills, partnerships and network development, with Saint Lucians resident in the country.

It was decided that such an approach would ensure that investment would not be limited to its financial dimension but would also include social capital ideals such as networking, mentorship, and organization capacity building.

This activity gives youth groups, service groups, community organizations, sports clubs, NGO’s, small businesses, schools, charitable organizations, development foundations and other like groups the opportunity to display their products/services.

It will also give those attending the convention, as well as residents, a profile of the groups with which they can partner or give assistance according to the identified needs.  It is envisaged that this exercise will see investment in communities and grass roots groups that major investors do not target.

Persons attending the convention expressed their delight with the displays, commenting that they were impressed with the variety of products on display.  It is a good opportunity for Saint Lucian businesses, students at summer camps, financial institutions and the public to meet with various groups and partner with them for development

One of the high lights of the Partnership Fair is the lunchtime seminars. Half hour presentations will be made by financial institutions like NDC, CMMB, ECHF, FICS, RBTT, First National Bank, SLDB, Bank of Nova Scotia, FCIB, and the Caribbean Association of Indigenous Banks.

Presentations will also be made by the Ministry of Finance, the Employers Federation, LUCELEC and the Chamber of Commerce.  The seminars are from 11 am – 2pm, from Tuesday 27th July to Thursday 29th July.  Come and enjoy lunch at Beausejour and listen to discussions focused on investing in Saint Lucia

Government Presents facts and Clarfication in Relation to Proposed US Scholarship Initiative

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The Cabinet of Ministers will give favorable consideration to any proposal for scholarships from overseas institutions only after it is satisfied that the best interest of Saint Lucian students is being met.

The process of due diligence which is always applied in relation to initiatives of this nature would include among other things: background checks and research to determine specifics related to scholarship financing, areas of training and how these relate to Government training priorities and current training programmes underway, examination of screening and selection process, accommodation arrangements for students, insurance coverage, etc.

Such arrangements and considerations must be spelt out in a Memorandum of Understanding document between the Government of Saint Lucia and the training institution in question.

Government wishes to make it clear that to date none of these critical aspects have been attended to. With respect to any scholarship training initiatives, Government must at all times act in manner which gives consideration to the best interest of the participants in such programmes. This is a responsibility that Government takes very seriously as it is held ultimately liable for any short-coming or mishaps which might occur.

Government promises a comprehensive statement on this matter soon at which time the full facts pertaining to the proposed US Scholarship programme and Government’s policy with respect to the provision of support for such ventures will articulated.

SLP joins in welcoming Saint Lucians home

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The Saint Lucia Labour Party is pleased to join other home based Saint Lucians in welcoming our brothers and sisters, resident overseas who have returned to be part of the Homecoming event presently taking place in Saint Lucia as part of a CARICOM initiative developed in 2009.

The SLP believes that there is tremendous economic potential in forging stronger links between the Saint Lucian diaspora and Saint Lucians at home for the following objectives:

1. To increase the understanding of the forms of collaboration between Saint Lucians at home and abroad and how to strengthen them;
2. To increase the understanding of how Saint Lucians at home and abroad may increase their interest and involvement in local organizations and their contribution to development areas of education, health, sports and others;
3. To increase the commitment of Saint Lucians at home and abroad to work together to find additional ways to pool financial resources as a source of investment capital.

The SLP also believes that Saint Lucians who have resided abroad should also be encouraged to return home to invest their experience and capital as part of the national development effort. Very early after assuming the seat of government in 1997, the Labour Administration demonstrated its commitment to that belief by instituting legislation to provide duty free concessions to returning Saint Lucians on their personal belongings. Those concessions were made available to any Saint Lucian who had lived more than ten (10) years abroad and provided for the duty free entry of their personal car or alternatively allowed for the duty free purchase of a car locally.

While wishing that all our brothers and sisters who are here for this Homecoming occasion and those who are here for other reasons have a pleasant and enjoyable stay, the SLP hopes that they also profit the opportunity to grasp a full understanding of the King Government’s disregard for good governance and the rule of law; and the shame inflicted on our country by their behaviour. Recent examples can be found in the OECS Appeal Court judgment in the Tuxedo Villas case and the US State Department’s 2009 Human Rights Report for Saint Lucia which portrayed a picture of rampant corruption in the Stephenson King Government.

The SLP believes that it will take the combined efforts of all Saint Lucians, home and abroad, to help return Saint Lucia to its place of respect in the regional and international community.

21-year-old anxious for baby

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Dear Bella: I am 21. I feel I am ready to have a child as it is my intention to further my education next year September and acquire my Bachelors degree in Jamaica. I do not have a fixed partner/boyfriend because I feel having a full time guy is too big of a responsibility for me at this time as I am focusing on myself.

There is this guy who is 24 that I normally have sex with. He is one of my two sexual partners. He is single but already has three kids whom he cannot maintain at his best since he is unemployed. I want to have a child with him because I think the child will be conceived with love. I am independent and my main source of income has been myself for a number of years now as I started working from the age of 16.

When I move to Jamaica to further my education, I don’t want to stop and think about making kids. I just want to continue to work on my career and everything. I am currently employed with a decent job but I have been doing the same thing for too long. I want to take the next step in life and by that I mean take a chance.

My mom thinks it’s too much of a risk and I should not think about a child right now. If you are now thinking what will I do with the child I have arranged to leave the child with my siblings in particular my sister, who have agreed under compensation terms.

What do you think I should do?

Thinking deep.

Dear Thinking deep,

While I commend you for having such a level head in knowing what you want and actually having plans to see it materialize, your decision to have a child in this plan is not fitting.

It’s not because you want to have a child early you should irrationally try to get pregnant and not think about the drawbacks that will come along with it. I do not encourage you to just drop an infant on your siblings and go off to Jamaica to study. A child needs the love and care of his mother as often as possible at an early age. It is so valuable when a child is nurtured and reared by both parents, and although you are assertive with your independence there are times you will want a steady male figure in the child’s life.

Work on your career as planned, pursue your studies and just be patient because you have not experienced motherhood and the thought of it right now is a mere desire, which you have not properly thought of the disadvantages behind.  You are young, independent and sound like you have a good head on your shoulders from your determination to pursue higher education, and having a child at this critical moment can even hinder you from achieving your aspirations sooner than you like. Another thing if it is still your wish to have a child after pursuing studies please reconsider your choice of having it with an unemployed 24-year-old with three kids.

New UN report paints unflattering picture of Latin America and the Caribbean

Monday, July 26th, 2010

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monday called for social policies, which tackle the problem of inequality in the region after a new report said the populations in Latin America and the Caribbean have the world’s highest levels of differences in wealth and income.

“This inequality is persistent, self-perpetuating in areas where social mobility is low and it poses an obstacle to progress in human development,” the UNDP said in its first development report for Latin America and the Caribbean entitled “Acting On The Future: Breaking The Intergenerational Cycle Of Inequality.”

It said 10 of the 15 most unequal countries in the world were to be found in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The report also finds that it is possible to reduce inequality through the implementation of public policies that lift the region out of the inequality trap.

The policies must have an impact on people, address the set of constraints that perpetuate poverty and inequality, and empower people to feel they are in charge of their development destinies, according to the report.

“This report reaffirms the critical importance of the fight against poverty, while indicating that it is necessary to go further,” said UNDP Regional Director Heraldo Muñoz.

“Inequality is inherently an impediment to progress in the area of human development, and efforts to reduce inequality must be explicitly mainstreamed in the public agenda,” he added.

For UNDP “equality is instrumental in ensuring meaningful liberties; that is to say, in terms of helping all people to share in meaningful life options so that they can make autonomous choices,” Muñoz said.

The UNDP said that women, indigenous populations and those of African descent were the groups hardest hit by inequality.

It said women in the region were paid less than men for the same work, have a greater presence in the informal economy and face a double workload.

The UNDP said compared to women of European descent, twice as many members of indigenous and African descended populations, on average, live on one US dollar a day.

“Inequality is a source of social vulnerability. For that reason, as the report shows, it’s critical to advance knowledge of the factors explaining inequality in human development in Latin America and the Caribbean and its persistence from one generation to the next,” said Rebeca Grynspan, UNDP’s associate administrator.

“That would allow the proposal of a strong framework for development of targeted policies that drive a more equality-based development,” she added.

According to the report, the most common public policies in the region have focused on specific aspects of combating poverty without considering the deep-seated nature of deprivation and its systemic relationship to inequality.

Caught up in a family conflict

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Dear Bella: I am between a rock and a hard place and don’t know what to do. First of all you have been doing a good job giving advice and opinion; keep up the good work. I am being forced to choose sides between my second cousin and my aunt.

They have been great people to me; I used to live with my cousin and she used to take care of me financially at one point in my life and my aunt on the other hand got me my first job soon after I finished school and I lived with her for approximately two months pro-bono.

My aunt’s boyfriend told my aunt that he slept with my cousin which is her first cousin and told her that they are still corresponding. My aunt made a big confusion and our family split apart for the exception of me not choosing sides. I am still speaking to both of them. My cousin said that there was no such thing but refused to stop talking to my aunt’s boyfriend. To tell you the truth Bella I don’t know what to believe because my aunt’s boyfriend is a big time liar and he will tell her one thing and go back and tell my cousin another.  Now my aunt is telling me to choose sides.

Dear Anonymous,

You must let you aunt down softly, but still speak the truth which may hurt her. Apparently, this showdown is as a result of a man who is not even faithful to your aunt. Let her know that she needs to stop making this man cause disunity within the family, and you would never choose him over them because that is what she’s basically asking you to do. Tell her how you mean so much to her as well as your cousin and she knows in her heart that her boyfriend is shady, but she is just denying it.

Tell her your cousin was not right to sleep with your aunt’s boyfriend; however it takes two to tango, and while it may be hurtful she has to learn to forgive her cousin eventually. Say to her that you do not want to get caught up in this confusion but you just want your family back the way things were and that’s why you cannot pick sides. Also avoid discussing the matter with your aunt and cousin or participating in any of their gossiping of each other.

Bella.

ALIVE WORD: Fear God – Part 2

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The Richardsons

“Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.”  1 Samuel 12:24

No matter who you are or where you are, whether you want to admit it or not, God has been good to you.  It is God who allowed us to wake this morning, who gave us the breath of life.  Many did not wake this morning and the reality is that only the mercies of God will allow us to make it through this day.  We should all show God how thankful we are for his goodness and mercies by serving Him in spirit and in truth.  God has promised blessings on those who fear Him.  “He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.”  Psalm 115:13

Some people want to be blessed but they do not want to fear God.  They want to live their lives however they feel, doing whatever they please, even if it is evil and wicked.  However, the devil does not play fair, so at some point he will turn on the wicked and then they wonder why God is allowing them to suffer or be overtaken with troubles.  They forget in the midst of their pain that it is the deeds of their own hands and their words and actions that has caused their troubles.  They do not want to fear God or serve God but they want God to bless them.  God is merciful but we are not to trample on His mercies.  Proverbs 3:7 states “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.”  It is time to fear God.

There are many people today who in the midst of bad situations have told God that if He would get them out of it they would serve Him the rest of their lives.  God heard their cries and delivered them out of their troubles but as soon as they were delivered they soon forget about the promise they made to God.  Are you such a person?  It is time to serve God, it is time to fear God.

Do you fear man and not fear God?  Do you compromise and please man even if it means that you sin against God and His word?  “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.”  Proverbs 29:25

Our lives are in the hands of God; God who not only made the world but made us.  Many are seeking power, fame, and wealth, filled with hidden agendas and plans of wickedness, having no regard for God and taking no thought for their souls or eternal destiny.  Some are bold enough to say that they can do whatever they want and no one can stop them.  Beware, for maybe man cannot stop you but God surely can.  Man is not the one to be feared, God is.  “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”  St. Matthew 10:28

Today, we want to encourage you not only to fear God but to serve Him.  You can do this by accepting Jesus Christ into your life and having a relationship with Him. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

“Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him.”  Ecclesiastes 8:12

NICE GUY: Can long distance relationships work? Yes, if you’re a big dreamer

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Can long distance relationships work? Yes, they can if you have tracking device embedded deep in the sex organs of each individual and a satellite video manning every move, or a jet to visit each other at least twice a week.

Otherwise, it cannot work.

Yea, I can see them nodding their head saying I am talking sh** again. But you very well know a long distance relationship cannot work, so shut up. It is over even before he/she flies or swims overseas. Give it two weeks for a male and six months for a female.

The fact is that we all need some physical intimacy, especially for men.  The sweet talks on the phone, emails every day, the affectionate emoticons on MSN and Facebook, aren’t enough. It gets boring and ordinary after a while.

We need to see, touch and feel all the time, and that’s where technology fails. Yes, it is possible to strip naked in front the cam and flash your boobs and get swef, or talk nasty on the phone but that still ain’t enough. We need to stick our bat in a wicket.  Watching you doing a mini-porn show does nothing much for us because many of us masturbate every day watching porn online, so what’s new? I mean we see you naked most of the time when we’re together, so it’s just stale. We’ll get off more with a girl we’re seeing for the first time.

In time, we grow bored of hearing the same *^&^%&^: “how was your?”, “Are you ok?”, “I had a good day”, “Baby, I miss you”, “Baby I love you”.  Shut the 8** up. That’s what some of us want to say sometimes. Imagine doing that for two years?

Everyone cheats in a long distance relationship. That’s a fact. If cheating does not take place, she will dump you for a next man or woman, or vice versa. So let no one fool you.

I remember I had an ex long ago. We were so in love. When I was leaving we cried. I thought my world crashed but we vowed to stay together until she can come over. My friends knew I was depressed but told me to stop because it was unnecessary, and that soon I will meet some hot chick to screw.

Of course, I protested, saying that’s bull*** and that I love my girlfriend; I would never do anything to hurt her. Well, it turned out that my friends were right. Less than three weeks later – after burning hundreds of dollars on phone cards and daily web cam stripping – I met a chick. We had sex and my girlfriend was history. Well, I did not tell her. However, she cheated too. I heard rumours shortly after I left that her granny caught her screwing a long-time ex of hers. I asked her about it and she denied it (of course you know women lie lol). Well, she later confessed she kissed her ex and nothing more. (Oh please; I’ll believe women when donkey grow wings).

It’s just that long distance relationships won’t work. I know a lot of people who are cheating in long distance relationship.

Today, however, I have a greater message for everyone: do not trust anyone who tells you that their girlfriend or boyfriend is overseas and they don’t think it’s gonna work. Most times that’s a trick. They will date you seriously and three years later when that so-called ex is back, the fire is re-ignited and you get dumped. It happens all the time.

A lot of people are going around telling people they are single, simply because they have a secret long distance relationship. And of course you fall victim because such cheaters appear to be truly single – but they are far from that.

So if you’re thinking about maintaining ties, stop fooling yourself and wasting time. I know it is summer when a lot of people reunite, screw and go back to the same crap, OR the time when people are preparing for a long distance relationship because their lovers are flying out later this year to start school.

But enjoy it while it lasts because even before you take the plane, his willy wally is already dipping into some sauce or her butter cup already has a spoon in it.

Alternatively, either may be getting friendly with a substitute so guard their feelings.

So peeps stop fooling yourselves about making it work. My advice is that if you love each other so much, prepare to move together and make a life. One in and one out won’t work.

A long distance relationship works when either party agrees to date anyone until they meet again.

See ya next week!

Government to “save” Pitons?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The Pitons will be among key issues to be discussed at the 34th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee, which opens on 25 July 2010.

UNESCO officials have confirmed that the piton management area has been under evaluation, and could be placed on the endangered list if their recommendations are not adhered to.

Minister responsible for the environment and physical development Richard Frederick will be attending the meeting and is expect to make a case for St. Lucia’s World Heritage Site.

“As it is, not too long ago the World Heritage Committee had sent a three-man delegation to investigate what was transpiring within the PMA, as it relates to the World Heritage status which we enjoy and the report was recently produced and whilst the report may not have contained false information per se, if read in isolation without having other information, one would be minded to believe, Government of St. Lucia might have disregarded the conditions under which the status was granted to us and  in that regard I felt it incumbent upon me, as minister responsible for physical development, to elucidate the panel , as it relates to the contents of the report,” the minister explained.

Representatives from 35 nations are expected to be in attendance at the meeting which will be held in Brazil.

The pitons were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in June 2004.

EU officials visit EU funded projects in St. Lucia

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

A Group comprising the Head of the European Commission Delegation to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Ambassador Valeriano Diaz; the British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, His Excellency Paul Brummel and the French Ambassador to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Ambassador Michel Prom toured a number of European Union funded projects in St. Lucia on Friday 23 July.

The projects viewed included the New National Hospital, the Anse-La-Raye Water Supply Improvement Project, the Human Resource Development Centre at Grande Riviere and the banana distribution centre at Odsun.

Construction work on the 38 million euro New National Hospital, began in March 2009 following the official turning of the sod on 9 March by Prime Minister Stephenson King and Ambassador Diaz.

When completed, the two-storey New National Hospital at Coubaril will be a 122 bed facility that will be the most modern public health care facility in the Caribbean. It will include an accident and emergency department, acute general wards, state of the art operating theatres, an intensive care unit and radiography facilities. The financing assistance for the new hospital is one of the largest grant allocations in the Caribbean by the European Union for a single project. On completion it will be the main health care facility in the island, replacing the 127 year old Victoria Hospital, which has been unable to meet the country’s growing health care demands.

The Anse-La-Raye Water Supply Improvement Project, which commenced in late 2009, is aimed at enhancing the quality of life in the community and surrounding areas such as Massacre and Au Tabor by improving the supply of potable water. It consists of a 400,000 gallon per day water treatment plant, a 200,000 gallon water storage tank, a reconstructed intake structure, and installation of a treated water distribution pipeline and chemical feeders for raw water treatment. The EC$6 million dollar project was funded under the EU’s Special Framework of Assistance, a banana support package aimed at helping ACP banana producing countries diversify their economies and also alleviate poverty.

The Human Resource Development Centre at Riviere is the largest such facility in the island and is expected to provide the surrounding communities with social and technical services. The Odsun banana distribution centre facilitates the reception, storage and packaging of fresh bananas prior to export to the United Kingdom and contributes to the reduction in transportation costs and to shorten average time between harvesting and cooling of bananas. These two projects were also funded under the SFA programme.

19-year-old mother hurting

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Dear Bella: I feel that my relationship is going down the drain. My man is 24 and I’m 19, and we have one child. I’m trying to look for job to support myself and my daughter since my man cannot provide right now and I have a very independent mind.

He keeps making promises that things will get better in a few months time. I’m confused since he always makes promises and don’t keep them. He barely gives me anything for me and my kid. I want to go back to school to further my education so I can be qualified for a reliable job, but he just wants me to go get work and don’t even want to help. Come on I was not brought up to depend on any man but women have needs.

Can you believe my hair has not been done for six months and he doesn’t even tell me anything about it? I mean has he no shame to see his girlfriend in that condition? I’m in two minds. Should I stick around or should I move on. Some of my friends say that he’s lucky I’m not like some women who would not stay around and take this kind of stress.

Devastated and Depressed.

Dear Devastated and Depressed,

Follow your heart, chase your dreams, and pursue your aspirations. Let no man or anyone to allow you to sacrifice so much for them and waste your time. Focus on you and your child and being an exemplary person for your daughter. Do what you have to do; you don’t need your boyfriend’s blessings anymore because the way I see it he has held you back enough.

He’s selfish and could care less. You need to put him in his place, tell him try harder at getting a job to support his kid and concentrate on what makes you happy. If he does not support you then he should be dead to you. It’s time young women stop depending on men and allowing them to tell them what they want for them. You know what is best for yourself.

Bella.

ALIVE WORD: Fear God – Part 1

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The Richardsons

“…yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God,which fear before him.” Ecclesiastes 8:12

If ever a time we truly need to fear God, it is now.  If you truly realize that it is God who made you and who is keeping you alive, you would then see the importance of fearing God and giving him thanks and praise by living your life for Him.  However, if for some reason the devil has deceived you into thinking or living as if you made yourself, you will neither have regard for God nor man.

In John 3:16 we read “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  Jesus Christ did not have to die for the sins of the world but he did.  He did it because of his love for us, so that we could be reconciled to God.  Do you fear God?

People who do not fear God have a tendency to swear and take the Lord’s name in vain.  “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” Exodus 20:7

It is only the mercies of God that some people are still alive, still sane, still have a family, still have a job, still have a home, still have peace, still have good health and strength.  Yet inspite of all this many refuse to fear God.  For some, education, social status has plunged them into a mindset that God is someone to be ignored, someone for people who are ignorant or illiterate.  Others think that only fools believe in God then of course there are those who say that there is no God.  “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” Psalm 14:1a

Wisdom is acquired by fearing God.  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” Psalm 111:10  Not only that but those who fear God hate evil, pride and arrogance.  “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Proverbs 8:13

People who fear God hate evil and the evil way.  Why?  Because there is a deep conviction within that there is accountability and responsibility for all actions.  “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”  Romans 14:12

It is a very dangerous and deadly thing to live without the fear of the Lord.  “The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.” Proverbs 10:27  In Psalm 36:1-3 it goes on to say “The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful. The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.”

Each of us should be mindful of what we say and do and the way that we treat others.  Those who do not fear God look around but those who fear God look up.  God is all knowing, all powerful, all seeing and He is everywhere.

Some have acquired wealth, riches, positions and possessions because of unscrupulous and evil means.  They took no thought of who they had to trample or what they had to do to get what they wanted or who they wanted; for the fear of God is not in them.  However, such people need to realize that pay day is coming for them.  “for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” Romans 14:10b  Do you fear God?

PM denies pegging VAT with pending elections

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

King

CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC – Prime Minister Stephenson King has denied suggestions that pending general elections due here by next year could have a bearing on when his administration introduces a new Valued Added Tax (VAT).

Countries in the Eastern Caribbean have long agreed on a joint position on the new tax, but St Lucia is yet to put a definitive timetable on when the tax will be introduced.

“General elections have absolutely no place in the timing of VAT,” King told reporters while in Grenada for the recent Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Monetary Council meeting.

“I think it is left to the government to determine the preparedness of the country. Are people fully sensitised even if you have been engaged in consultation with the various social partners,” he asked.

In recent times, both Grenada and St Kitts and Nevis delayed introducing VAT with pending general elections.

In Basseterre, the Denzil Douglas administration which was re-elected in January announced soon afterwards that VAT will be introduced before the end of the year. It has since said the rate will be 17 per cent.

In St Lucia, consultations have been held on the new tax regime for two and a half years, with no indication as to when it will be introduced.

“So the government is fully committed, the political will is there and certainly at the right moment we will introduce it,” King said.

The Cabinet has already approved the replacement tax on goods and services and King said preparations are being made to introduce the VAT legislation in Parliament.

“Once it has gone through Parliament then the final determination will be made in terms of when it comes into operation,” the Prime Minister said.

“But generally we are on target and I am hoping very soon we will be able to indicate how and when we will proceed,” he assured.

The introduction of the VAT is in keeping with a decision taken the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) in 2003, following a recommendation by the tax commissioners from the nine-member Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Since the decision of the Council, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and St. Vincent and Grenadines have already implemented VAT (or Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax in St John’s), while St. Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia are preparing to do so soon.

Grenada implemented VAT earlier this year.

Youth discuss the environment

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

The environment will be the subject of discussion, when hundreds of primary and secondary school students, between the ages of 7 and 18, across the island gather at the RC Boys Primary School for the 2nd annual Youth Environment Forum, on Monday July 26th.

This initiative is organized the Saint Lucia National Trust supported by the Bank of Saint Lucia, which has once again donated $5000.00 to the Trust as part of its three-year commitment to the Forum.

The Bank has reiterated its concern for both the youth and the environment and is pleased to be associated with such an initiative.

According to Communications and Advocacy Officer of the St. Lucia National Trust, Caretta Crooks Charles says the overall aim of the project is “to empower youngsters to become advocates for environmental and heritage conservation.”

“This is important because if you give them the necessary tools now, this is one way to ensure that our future is in good hands, you will have policymakers who are more sensitive to the environment and will do what it takes to preserve the environment.”

Mrs. Charles says biodiversity will be under focus this time around.

“They will be learning more about animals, different plant life, endangered species, even invasive species, what should be done if they are spotted…so we’re looking forward to a successful YEF 2010.”

This year, the Youth Environment Forum is being hosted under the theme ‘Many Species, One Planet, One Future’.

The two-week exercise comprises of lectures, presentations and field trips.

The aim of the Forum is to educate participants on environmental issues so that they can become advocates for the environment in their schools, homes and communities.

LPM Leader Says: Good governance in St Lucia is under siege

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

July 22nd, 2010

Statement:

The Political Leader of the LPM, Mr. Therold Prudent, says that an incident which originated in St. Lucia last week has reinforced his
Party’s greatest fears, and has confirmed beyond the shadow of a doubt, that St Lucians  hopes and aspirations to achieve respectful and good
governance in our homeland come the next general election is under relentless siege.

“St. Lucians  may not be fully aware of the grave situation under which we live right now,” the Political Leader lamented,  ‘but, they must be
forewarned that sinister forces and elements within our government, steeped in political mischief and vindictiveness, have entirely succeeded in wresting power away from those who were legally and legitimately entrusted with it.”

“It is sad and unfortunate that the government of the day is experiencing such a catastrophic breakdown in the legitimate exercise of its authority, such that many St. Lucians have yet to appreciate, analyze, and fully  understand what they are seeing.”

” In this new illegitimate dispensation of power and authority, those who have sworn to uphold the laws of the country and protect its citizens and people, are capitulating weak-kneed  and subserviently to the sinister elements in government, who do not hold the public trust as sacred, the public’s confidence as important, or the public interest as paramount.”

St. Lucians must hastily wake up to the reality of this evil  which we have allowed to grow and menace our society,  unchecked and unbridled,in these last few years.

“We must decide whether we want to continue along the path that allows those in office to convert government institutions into personal fiefdoms and use them as tools to settle scores with detractors, or as weapons to victimize implacably,  hardworking and honest St. Lucians who they perceive as enemies.”

“If honest, effective and good governance represents a worthy and indispensable national goal for all St Lucians, regardless of their political persuasion,  then victimization, as a way of settling scores with those who in the exercise of their freedom of speech, criticize any member of government, must be unequivocally rejected nationwide.

Further,  we must cast such political mischief  upon the historical scrapheap of things not desirable or tolerated in any decent and democratic society.”
